I tracked down where the dude lives too.

Sam Lee, a church elder, said he was surprised to hear of the beating, saying Kim and the boy's family were good people. He said he believed the charges stemmed from some type of misunderstanding about the "Korean way of doing things."

This is just idiocy. It has nothing do with X or Y way of doing things. Spanking is one thing, but bruises on the back of the legs with metal pole is another. That's not corporal punishment, that's assault and battery.

Yeah, this is maddening to read. There is a big difference between negative reinforcement and inflicting this degree of trauma on a child.
