has anyone heard the sony SA5000 or CD900ST?
« on: December 30, 2011, 07:20:01 AM »

wonder if anyone here had chance to listen to one of the two? reason i ask cause i'm interested on trying both of them but, can't try to get both cause i plan on maybe trading my K601 with original box for one of them since money is very tight right now and last of my saved money is going into a new audio interface. only way i can think of trying one of these is trading cause, i don't know anyone locally to try them or possibly borrow/audition one. kinda having second thoughts though, so i put it mostly as an interest check on head-fi, cause every time i put these on they sound pretty darn amazing, especially after i removed the foam disc it gave it boost in clarity is what giving me second thoughts, but i'm really interested in both the SA5000 and CD900ST.

anyone heard of these? worth the effort of trying to trade up my K601 one of these? any thoughts?

I'll send my SA5000 to you after I get it back from Anax.

I could not ever withstand treble galore of SA5000 and its step-up Q010 (actually, they are same headphones. Only difference is that SA5000 is mass-manufactured while Q010 is hand-made with fancier cosmetics). I personally found SA3000 far better than SA5000, but both headphones are not worth buying.

I have not heard CD900ST.

I once had a Sony CD900 ST. I traded it for a Beyerdynamic DT480, an underrated gem.

The CD900 ST is the MDR V6 done right yet bright. Emphasis on the midrange at the cost of sub-bass and good highs. I consider it the best Sony if you need something for the midrange and on the condition that you keep the volume low. The CD900 ST can make bad recordings sound horrible.

Here are my old notes from HF: http://www.head-fi.org/t/490569/headphone-notes

See number 22. Yes, I was a fanatical collector.

I've read this before. By the way, were your pads on them still the original ones and in new condition when you reviewed them? I've heard they sound really bright and annoying when using v6 pads or similar.

I had the original CD900 ST.

If ever you want to turn your good Sony headphone into a MDR V6, have fun with your headaches. I despise Sony for making the MDR V6 and claiming it is as good as they say it is. After the Pioneer Monitor 10 and K240 DF I could not bring myself to even appreciate that "thing." The CD900 ST is a good headphone that deserves appreciation but for me loses out to Pioneer and AKG smoothness in sound.
