New JDSLabs amp...
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:52:00 PM »

Hello!

So, did anyone read the following:

http://blog.jdslabs.com/?p=464

?

It looks like an interesting amp from Seaber and co.
I have had the CmoyBB, and the c421 so I would definitely like to try this one even if I don't end up using it as much (i.e. I recently sold my Leckerton UHA-6SMKII because I'm only using my Schiit Magni at work...)

Thoughts?

 facepalm From the website:

Quote (selected)
I interviewed an electrical engineer in January. He’d applied here after discovering the Objective2, and during our discussion, he asked, “What’s there left to design? The O2 is audibly perfect. How can you build anything better than that?”

What a dumbass thing to say.

Yeah, seriously. You just know a lot of folks eat that shit up too. If you don't think the O2 is the greatest amp ever conceived then you obviously have no understanding of electrical engineering!

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Funny the electrical engineer, rather than an audio engineer, claimed the O2 was audibly perfect.

I interviewed a clown last Tuesday, who said the SR60's are audibly perfect as well.

My goodness.  Eight pounds of hubris in a five-pound bag.  Where do I go to slap these people across the face with a dead fish?

All bad quotes aside though, it's a slick looking little amp. I love the basic form factor and 14-hour battery life claims. I'm generally not a fan of digital volume control though, because the steps tend to either be too big to be usable, or too fine to be practical.

I wonder if their C241 amp sounds like the Objective 2 at all. Anyone heard both?

It was an interesting read, thanks for sharing. I had the C421 for a while and thought it was quite the pleasant pairing with the Senn 598s. The bass boost was a surprise, as I felt it was implemented quite well.

If the C5 is an improvement over the C421 in the same price range, I would say they did a good job. After getting used to the size of the Dragonfly and the ease of plug and play on the go, I'm not sure the C5 is in my future. I wish them all the best though, as my experience with JDS Labs was quite positive.

EDIT: @Quest, I have heard both but sold the C421 off a good while ago as it didn't really have a place in my setup (Preference for O2 due to higher impedance headphones at home, Dragonfly for transportable, DAP alone for truly portable). From memory, it was not an unfavorable comparison for the C421. They did a good job on it IMO.

C421 was not as "refined" as the O2 I tried and was not as powerful either but I did enjoy the c421 a whole lot as it was DEFINITELY as step up from the CmoyBB, and the NuForce Icon Mobile I had. And the bass boost was VERY well done... I used it with my Shure SRH940s (when I had them) and didn't really muddied everything up.
I still think the amp section of the Leckerton UHS-6SMKII is better than all of these... so I'm actually expecting a C5 vs Leckerton showdown!!!!
