King Sound "Emperor" Electrostatic Headphone System
« on: January 29, 2013, 02:26:16 AM »

I was just going to post a link in the shoutbox as its been mentioned in passing a couple times already but I figure a few members here will end up owning these down the line, may as well start a thread now.

Here's Drew from Moon's teaser pic:

Here's shots from hifiplus:

With the SS amp:

With the tube amp:

(According to hifiplus the headphone alone will be only $500, with SS $800, with tube $1600.)

I was all set to buy a King speaker from a local Dagogo reviewer recently but it they weren't willing to part with their premo power supplies.  A stat speaker maker getting into the game seems a logical progression, but it just hasn't happened yet.  Apparently King don't use OEM's so that's promising.

What's cool is the price.  They will be sold with matching amps- with the SS amp Drew's projection is $800-1000, with a tube stat amp it will be $1500-$2000.  Pretty attractive package to someone trying to make their first foray into stats.

Specs, also lifted from Drew:

He gives sonic opinions but honestly the way he hypes every new Beyer flagship's sound only for them to suck I wouldn't really put much weight in dealer thoughts.

Still, pretty cool.  Whether the product ends up being good or not, it shows people recognize the market is there.

The other thing I really like is how this product is essentially the anti-Abyss.  You have a company who is known for their abilities with the very same tech (stats) releasing into a market starved for options, and instead of saying "we're going after the 009's price point", they're offering relatively attractive pricing for a small company producing a product in-house.  Good stuff.

 :money:

Can't quite make out the connector slot from that promo shot, it wouldn't by any chance be the Stax pin out?

Can't quite tell either.  That would be really cool if they did, there would finally be some semblance of a standard.  On the other hand it would be a tacit admission that Stax reigns supreme - if they're serious about getting in the market, they need to start some format wars.  I'll email Drew and ask him about the plug.

I probably saw it there as well at some point.  We've discussed it here in the shoutbox once or twice, but this is the first real sign (to me) that its further along than just POC.

Now we need Sound Lab, Acoustat, ML, Sanders, and Janszen need to join the fray.

Thanks for sharing this. It looks very promising -- and I agree that this is the direction I'd hope more manufacturers joining the fray would take.

Are King Sound speakers generally well-respected in the speaker world?

At that price I'd be willing to buy with a good return policy to back it up in case I don't like them. Really like the styling of both the phones and the tube amp.

edit: Moon Audio has a good return policy 5% restock and 14 days length.

Sent a pm to Drew asking a few questions (voltage, plug) and asked to be updated on details as more come available.

Oh I just noticed in the specs it says 450VDC, that's different from both pro and normal bias Stax (230/580 normal/pro) as well as Koss (600) and Orpheus (500). Guessing that means it won't be compatible with any current stat amps?

You could always just run it on pro bias and see what happens  :&
