It would be difficult, nay, impossible, to be a huge fan of Living Colour (which I am) and not "get" Van Halen.

There's no way to dig deeper into this without saying some things that are inflammatory, so I'm dropping it.

I love Living Colour.  Vernon Reid is the bomb!

I like them both. Different times, different styles. For me it depends a bit on mood, and memories come into play. I go headbang headbang headbang either way with Van Halen.

From DLR times I like:
Panama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-NshzYK9y0)
Jump (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlq0lYB3iSM)
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-IUB62zDlA)

From Hagar times I like:
Why can't this be love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK5zubdgf4Y)
Dreams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkuu4e3kdC8)
When it's love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9thvSfq8w2o)

Van Halen I and Van Halen II for the win! I might still have the vinyl somewhere.

1984 was a huge disappointment for us junior high schoolers into Van Halen - at the time that is - although I feel that album has stood the test of time.

For me it's not even close. Roth era is much better, plus you gotta love a Jim Dandy styled frontman. Who wants Van Halen love songs? Hagar for me is much better in Chickenfoot. Love that band!
