It's the "age old question", Van Halen vs. Van Hagar?
As odd and offensive as DLR could/can be I do prefer the music the band made during the (first) DLR era.
However I can't help but accept that without Hagar the band would have been finished. They went on to make some decent music.
As for the second (or is it the third) coming of DLR... I don't even consider it part of the debate.
Ok swabbies, who's it going to be?
-
False choice, we get to have both. ;)
-
Different bands and I love them both. DLR for the classic more organic sound. Van Hagar for the more modern sound.
-
Was never really a fan of Hagar. It's not that he didn't work well with the group, but I think they lost some of the playful irreverence under DLR that I loved. Maybe it's just a case of group growing up, but I preferred DLR in the line up hands down.

For better or worse (or maybe for better and worse, David Lee Roth was Van Halen.
We'll save the question of why they made it big while a number of much better bands that came up in SoCal at about the same time never made it past cult status (Los Lobos, X, the Plimsouls, the Blasters, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, TSOL, Social D) for another thread.

"Los Lobos, X, the Plimsouls, the Blasters, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, TSOL, Social D"
Good list of local bands! All bands I dig. Let's get that thread started! I'd happily offer that at least Social D made is just beyond cult status with a few singles like Ring of Fire, Ball and Chain, and Story of my Life... or maybe I'm just too much of a fan. Always cool when a good punk band makes it.
-
You seriously can't figure out why Van Halen made it bigger than Los Lobos??
Social D and Oingo Boingo are fine but the number of hits Van Halen had by comparison, I mean, really...
-
No, I just like those bands.
On the other hand, I don't consider a band good or bad by the number of hits they have...

No, I can't (I have the same problem figuring out why Kenny G made it bigger than Joshua Redman). Los Lobos can play, they can write, they put on amazing live shows, and they have something to say.
What are you saying? Be explicit.

Obviously a hard/pop rock band will be more accessible and popular than another band that has a more cultural or genre niche. I'm also not sure if you are discounting Van Halen simply because you might not like/get their music? You might want to sit down when you learn how popular AC/DC was last year and how much dough they raked in compared to Los Lobos. Btw, I'm a big Los Lobos fan but come on. Bob Dylan will never be more popular than Elvis or the Beatles.
-
It would be difficult, nay, impossible, to be a huge fan of Living Colour (which I am) and not "get" Van Halen.
There's no way to dig deeper into this without saying some things that are inflammatory, so I'm dropping it.
-
I love Living Colour. Vernon Reid is the bomb!
-
Neither? :&

I like them both. Different times, different styles. For me it depends a bit on mood, and memories come into play. I go headbang headbang headbang either way with Van Halen.
From DLR times I like:

Van Halen I and Van Halen II for the win! I might still have the vinyl somewhere.
1984 was a huge disappointment for us junior high schoolers into Van Halen - at the time that is - although I feel that album has stood the test of time.

I had that on yesterday afternoon.

For me it's not even close. Roth era is much better, plus you gotta love a Jim Dandy styled frontman. Who wants Van Halen love songs? Hagar for me is much better in Chickenfoot. Love that band!
