Recording/Originals

Are you a musician? Take a moment to post your own music (that you are willing to share) here.

I'm interested in making this thread because I'd like some opinions on the recording (rather than musical quality) of this incomplete track. Please share with me any and all thoughts. I think the sustained EPiano (which is taking the place of a pad) possibly has too much attack and is too quiet, and the piano is probably recorded too loud. The master track also peaks in a few places, but that was intentional - I'll probably get rid of it, because I don't think I like it.

As for music:
It's hard to say what is missing from the track still, but I'm not happy with how it develops. It needs bass to come in, maybe. It also still needs vocals. I want to adjust the chords more on the piano, at the moment it's a bit 'tierce de picardie in one or two places for my liking. It's probably going to end up much more listener-friendly with vocals, since I'm trying to combine elements of what I'd consider faiirly ambient music with more radio-friendly genres. Maybe some heavier drums, but I am trying to focus on the muted bass strings as drums (up to you to decide what it is supposed to be).

If you'd like to comment on both, please separate the comments on recording and the music so it's easy to read for me. If you think you have the story behind the piece, even without lyrics, I'd like to hear your guesses.

Also, a question just to check the recording technique:
What is the thing I recorded at the start of the piece?
Does it sound like it was recorded in a different fashion to other instruments?

Thanks :) FYI, I plan to release the completed version of this on free albums (since I believe in the free distribution of culture). Since I don't have monitors, it's made on and for headphones. But I'd like to hear people with speakers, too.

Hopefully at least someone replies

SOUND
I Agree with you about the piano chords. Either bring them in more softly, or fade the tracks beforehand to make the chords stand out at lower volume (have only the Epiano remain for maybe a few notes before letting the sustain end. When the decay hits an acceptable point, bring it up together, adding the chords, of course.)

There are times (1:10-1:12, 1:42-1:48, 2:02-2:08, 2:42-2:46, 2:57-3:06, 3:21-3:29, 3:54-4:02) where the Epiano "pad" gets swallowed up a bit by the strong piano chords and ambient sounds. Not sure how you'd like to handle that. (corrective EQ? Mixing Automation? leave it as is?)

I not a huge fan of that heavily-panned-left reverberant tone at 2:29... Distracting and lingers too long for my taste.

Otherwise, I enjoy the great spatial effects, and the instrumentation matches fluidly.

MUSICAL STRUCTURE
up until 0:45 is flawless. Adding anything else would simply be a matter of personal taste. You might want to try to do something with the piano chords, like you mentioned, as I feel it starts too abruptly. (maybe you want that, though.)

The form I notice is progressive with an overall AB format. maybe make the rhythmic pseudo-drum drop out, or at least change the pattern up for a bit before the dampened bass strings come into play. (a drawn-out bridge, perhaps?)

I'm not sure if you just shortened the recording for the BOX upload, but I'm curious to hear how you might end it.
I hope this song might give you some inspiration --> Perfect Blue Sky, JXL (feat. Rob Smith)

Happy Songwritin'!

Thanks a lot for your comments, and for the kind words. I agree a lot with what you said.

As for the duration of the music... it's hard to say where it is going from here. I'm going on a tour of Europe tomorrow, so it's been put on the back burner a bit. I'm currently finalising packing and things of that nature, so I'll get around to responding in more depth later.

As for my own inspirations, it ranges pretty wildly from things like Carbon Based Lifeforms to Miles Davis. Two influences that are completely standard yet unobvious at this point are Bjork and Thom Yorke. I always really liked what they did with vocal melodies, so I hope I can get something similar going.

 :)

In the interests of keeping the thread alive ( )( ) I've been playing with a new synth recently, a Waldorf Micro Q. Just been creating things that are reminiscent of underwater levels from 16 bit era video games at the moment.

Out of interest to other musicians: Both of these songs I've posted have been polymetric :)
