Marv, you are right the ZD is not without color, but it's a great sound.  The ZD really was a keeper, selling it hurts... all sales are part of going all stat and trying to generally consolidate.

Okay- I'm finally getting around to selling camera lenses and such...do you guys still prefer the PWD2 to the M51 right now?
 
There is a used PWD (upgraded to 2) for sale.
 
(I know this is the amp thread, can ask in the DAC thread if better.)

Yes.  The firmware issue seems to be getting sorted and really not too big a deal, especially since NAD now has multiple FW versions as well.  This is just going to be an inescapable part of life I think.

M51 is probably better than PWD1 all things considered, some aspects better some not.
PWD2 is better than M51 overall, but I think M51 does some things as good.


Still looking for a better DAC, but haven't heard anything better within $1k of the PWD2's price range.

I'll try to do a comparison in couple days. I only listen to the w4s out of coax as the USB sounds dull to me. It does have a nice "analog" sound but I feel it is a bit dark and colored, not neutral. The highs are a bit rolled off which actually works fine with the HD800 as they are not fatiguing. I do however dislike that is very forward and punchy in the mids so vocals often sound shouty. I'm looking for a DAC that is a little more transparent and also more detailed as I find the w4s a bit fuzzy with the HD800.

I've got the Moth 2A3 on its way from Finland, and I'll be having Craig do some modifications to move the rectifier tube out of the main chassis and into a separate box, along with some other upgrades. When it's all said and done Craig expects it to perform on the level of the BA, maybe even better in some respects.

Despite this I still plan on keeping the Zana Deux SE. It's a fine amp, and out of everything I've ever purchased in this hobby, it ranks at the top of stuff that has consistently given me the most enjoyment over the years. I don't think there's a single pair of headphones I've tried with it that hasn't at least sounded good (if not great). Even the K1000 and HE-6 sound pretty damn nice, though there are certainly better solutions out there. I suspect *some* of those solutions wouldn't also sound as nice with the HP1000 and TH900 however.

Between those two amps, I'm pretty much satiated as far as my dynamic rig goes. I've sold my B22, Concerto, Leben, and will likely be selling the Phonitor soon too. There are really only three dynamic amps at the moment that interest me: the LAu, the Pinnacle, and the monster Hashimoto amp from Craig. Due to circumstances I'm probably not going to end up with the LAu, so that just leaves the Pinnacle and the Leviathan** on the horizon.

**QH called it the Kraken on head-fi, which is a pretty awesome name for an amp IMO. However I'm more partial to "Leviathan." Eddie Current Leviathan sounds nice and scary.
