Effin Popcorn
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:34:55 AM »

Anyone have any recommendations for the best microwavable popcorn?  I'm looking for some really good stuff.  Fluffy and delicious.

I'm now looking at these two poppers.

airpopper

electric pan popper

I also read that you can just put kernels in a paper bag or bowl an pop them in the microwave.  Anyone tried that?

This way you could use some really good corn which would be nice.

I did the paper bag method in the microwave years ago.  It was never very successful. As I recall you needed a plate or something under the bag to act as a heat sink.

I used to prefer the stove top method, kernels in oil in a bowl.  With care it always gave me the best results.

Air poppers seem much healthier and give consistent easy results.

That's crazy talk. Poppers are for coffee!

My favorite microwaveable is the Orville Redenbacher's Movie Theater Butter because it's so deliciously buttery. When I go to the movies, I put disgustingly obscene amounts of butter on my popcorn.

I could never get into kettle corn. Fun and novel for 4 bites, then get this shit outta my face.

Amen!  These crazy English don't use butter on their movie  popcorn!  Are they crazy or what?  They have that silly sweet/kettle corn, but what is a movie without movie  popcorn

RD you should try plain kernels popped in an air popping machine (we had one that resembled the one in the first link) with a light touch of olive oil and salt. Just a hint of salt to open up the taste buds, will enhance the flavor of the EVOO.

I liked it a lot more than any microwavable bag brand.

I have a chef friend that likes to do it with a pan covered with tin foil over the stove, shaking the pan when the popping starts (like sauteeing motion)

You think an airpop would be better than the electric pan with auto-stir?

The airpopper seems like it's faster, less cleanup, but harder to get melted butter on.  You maybe have to melt it in a separate bowl.
the electric pan seems like a bit more time and cleanup, but you can just throw butter into the pan at the beginning.

I've only used the air popper. I think it makes good fluffy popcorn, without too many burnt ones. I add the oil to the popcorn in a bowl then toss. Doesn't coat them perfectly.

I have the Presto airpopper and highly recommend it.  You can put the butter on the measuring cup that goes on the top. The air heats the cup and melts the butter. I however just put lemon and chilli to my popcorn.

Bingo! toss the butter in the smallest saucepan you have, and melt it on the lowest heat that will get you a liquid by the time your corn is done popping.
