Advice - measuring FR for speakers
« on: November 08, 2012, 03:03:55 PM »

As I wait for my speaker rig to come togther...which is taking longer than expected due to:
  • Invicta currently getting a rectal examination by Canadian customs.
  • Speakers being repaired at Devore Fidelity's Brooklyn factory.
  • The UPS guy deciding to drive by my house with my power amplifier and call it: delivery attempt failed.
(Fail indeed.)

I'm starting to think about placement and calibration.  Can anyone give me an understanding of the equipment/procedures needed for measuring FR in my room?

I figure this has to be less complicated than measuring headphones, since I don't need to worry about seal and in this case, I WANT to hear all the reverb & effects of the room.

The hope is that it'll help as I play with placement and acoustic treatment.

Cheapest/simplest setup:

Calibrated mic - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=390-801

USB mic preamp - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001EW5YQS

RTA software - http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq or http://www.trueaudio.com/rta_abt1.htm

Assuming you're not going to want to go with an A/D D/A EQ because of the invicta, there's the DEQ2496 http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/DEQ2496.aspx

Alternately, for the de-luxe room measurement and correction experience, there's the DEQX http://www.deqx.com/product-hdp4-overview.php

A very good paid package is ARTA for measurements.

X2 on ARTA.

Cross spectrum labs sells better calibrated Dayton emm-6 if you feel that the default Dayton calibration isn't good enough.

Might want to look into DRC as well.

Perfect!  And not bank breaking.  I'll look deeper into these when I get home.

There's also the XTZ Room Analyzer which is very good. http://www.acousticfrontiers.com/XTZ-Room-Analyzer-II-Standard.html

I'm not a fan of the DEQX stuff unless the speakers are active crossover types that are specifically designed for it. DSP can only go so far, it's good at dealing with peaks, much less so with nulls, particularly at low frequencies. I think a good combination of traps and diffusers will give better results.
