Okay, maybe it is "elephantitis of the placebo" with these HUGE caps in here now...but the difference between the Super 7 and DAC1 HPA seems to be much more pronounced after cap replacement surgery.

I'll spend more time on more occasions, but the Jantzen 0.1 Silvers/Jantzen 10 Superiors seem to extend the bass and "sweeten everything" by making the stage bigger and also taking some of the "digititus treblitis" out of the DAC1 feed...overall a very worthy improvement on top of the tube combo I am digging ATM.

Definitely seems "sweeter/more natural" and closer to the "magic" that I have been chasing since hearing purrin's PWD>BA>800 rig.  I can turn this thing up now.  headbang

Acclimating to the difference, it can sound a little "slower" on a couple of tracks such as David Gilmour's On An Island at first, but I'm fine forsaking the more "forward/edgy" sound of the DAC1>HD800 that seems "faster" for the better DAC1>Modded S7>800 presentation.
Thanks, Anaxilus for the cap-rolling and sharing of notes.  :)p1

And thanks also to particleman14 for the help in replacing "Tic Tac" sized caps with the "Coke cans".

(Don't try to mount the 10uf caps to the PCB.  Secure the big caps to the bottom of the case and then run extended leads to the PCB that's mounted to the top plate.  The red caps in the photo of this thread are not the red Jantzen Superior caps which are much larger and you ain't gonna fit them on the PCB. )

Glad you like it, be sure to report back after a week or two and keep your notes handy.

The 10uF caps are about the size of medium sized deodorant sticks.

Good stuff, CT! Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts once you have a chance to acclimate.

Q-hate, Before you roll your caps in, let's get together and compare.  I can confirm my impressions and you can hear the difference too...plus I'll show you how mine was done and we can try to improve the work on yours.

Get perm marker and write numbers on the power / audio connectors from the PC board to the various power and audio transformers wires.

So did you  guys ever get around to trying any more expensive caps in the S7? I bought Tari's unit, and I was looking at grabbing the Jantzen Silvers listed in this thread, but he pointed me towards some duelund and clarity caps. Those are awful expensive, I wouldn't mind spending more than the silvers cost but I'm not sure I would spend 650 bucks on caps for an 1800 dollar amp.

I would do the Jantzen Z-Superiors or motor-run caps in the interstage and Obligatos or the Z-Superiors in the feedback. The Silvers are too analytical. You'll get different answers depending upon who you ask.

My advice is don't waste money on caps.

Simply replacing the feedback electrolytic cap with a film type yields the most gains. Then the interstage cap with something better than the Solen. After that, it gets incredibly incremental - not necessarily better, but different.

If you are going to waste money on caps, might as well get a EC4-45 and not worry about it. But then you'll have to worry about whether you want to glow tubes or not.
