Anyone know a good noise machine, or some good tracks with white noise type stuff?  It might be nice if it was a natural sound and not actually white noise.

I  recommend nature album, from website listening earth, in the category "trinitus relief".
In  particular the album, "distant ocean" that I  found soothing. It might help to sleep if you are anxious:

List of album, they recommend for trinitus (i.e spacious , unchanging, and more rewarding than plain noise):

Available in lossless.

Otherwise you could listen to stuff from  Iannis Xenakis , I  like the track Bohor from abum  Electronic Music. Some people would detract Xenakis as being just random and talentless, but I  found that the randomness imitate well nature . The fact that each  track is inspired by some mathematic theory/model , is probably a plus.

If you search the web, you can also find ambient sounds for Tomb Raider game too.

So the noise thing isn't working.  If it's loud enough to mask the birds in the morning, it wakes me up on it's own.  The best thing I found was a recording of Victoria Falls, and I turned it into a 10 hour long track with an hour long fade in, set to start at 4am.

How about earplugs?  Is it healthy to wear earplugs every night?  I'm hesitant to do so because of the pressure they put in your ear canal.

Does anyone have any earplugs they can recommend that may be better in this way?

I advise against it, wearing earplugs for that long is not natural and may cause wax buildup. I learnt that the hard way, my ears became effin ringing because of them :(

You can get plugs that will attenuate only certain frequency ranges.  I'd have to look into it more when I have the time to get you links.  Think Ety, ACS, Sensaphonics, Westone had stuff like that.

How is the noise getting through? Maybe a good idea to upgrade the windows? (If that's possible.)

Otherwise, it sounds to me you need an automated sentry. Seriously, take a look at this. Changed the training targets from images of squirrels to images of crows, and you got yourself a crow targeting sentry.

Crows are just loud as hell, and it's a very shrill, harsh, jarring sound unlike all the other animals around here.  And there's thousands of them where I live, they're totally overrun and overpopulated and have no predators since they can gang up on hawks by the dozen.  They don't land on my property anymore since I started shooting plastic BB's at them relentlessly, but I think I've also been woken up by them so many times by now, I've kind of been programmed to wake up to it even though it's quieter than it used to be.

I thought maybe there's a soft earplug that is less attenuating but would be enough and less pressure.  Maybe I should just cut my own plugs out of soft memory foam...

I find using silicone earplugs i.e. the ones you wear underwater, and spreading them across the outer ear canal instead of pushing them into the ear canal works great for avoiding having things in your ears all night, while obtaining some amount of isolation.

YMMV

I think if you exercise good hygiene you won't have any issues with wax buildup.  I used ear plugs at work all day every day for years without any issues.  If it were me, I'd go for some custom molds, easy to keep clean.

What about the pressure in the ear canal?
