Power Conditioners/Glorified Power Strips, etc.
« on: September 16, 2012, 11:24:26 PM »

Thought I would start this thread as some conversation started in the shout box and the CA Online Tax thread...

Would like to hear what you guys think.

I have a Furman to measure Voltage and Amps (glorified power strip) + a Tripp Lite UPS (that I need to get working again).

I am tending to think that I should put the UPS between the wall and the Furman so that I know what is coming out of the Tripp Lite UPS.

Will do more reading later.  Hope I learn more from any discussion here!

My set-up goes...

Wall outlet -> DIY Passive Power Filter -> Waber Wavetracker  Isolated Noise Filter & Surge Protector -> Various components.

I am tending to think that I should put the UPS between the wall and the Furman so that I know what is coming out of the Tripp Lite UPS.

It shouldn't matter too much unless you think the output of one of them is likely to need monitoring but you might as well put it after the UPS since the UPS probably won't care much about whatever it gets from the wall socket.

To ramble on along a tangent I've got several of these in different sizes that almost all my stuff is powered though.  The power from the wall is plenty clean so I don't really notice them doing anything for the sound of any of my equipment but I'm paranoid about surges, spikes, and what not destroying my stuff and the big ones will probably eat anything short of a direct lightning strike.

If you're patient enough you can find good deals on used ones and the transformer, which does most of the work, won't really wear out.

I'm currently using a B-P-T BP-1 balanced transformer. It's 900VA which is more than enough for just about any headphone setup, we'll see how well it works in the upcoming speaker rig. I'm planning to use HE speakers, so the 7.5A is probably enough. If not, I'll probably use it for source equipment, and add a PI UberBUSS for the amp.

I only use surge protectors since i live in the tropics and violent thunderstorms are a fairly weekly thing. Other than that nothing. more due to price than anything I just cant warrant putting massively expensive electrical filters and what not between the wall and my $2k speaker/amp combo.

Am I missing something, or is that backwards?

I've just got a surge protector. I can't see anything else being needed unless you've got serious problems with your AC (IMHO)...

nope, the power conditioners are ridiculously expensive here (almost as much as my whole system) that's SGD$2k for an amp, and 5 speakers. I can't warrant spending at least half as much on a power supply that i am not even sure will make a difference as Singapore has a fairly stable and good power supply. I do need surge protectors though.

OK.  You wording didn't make sense because if you have storms all the time you'll need a good surge suppressor even more.
