I'm kind of curious when someone says they prefer the ODAC and that it is better than a Modi, I wonder in what way is it better?  I'm pretty sure it doesn't measure better in most aspects which is what most ODAC fans would focus on.

Well, unlike the ODAC, the pupDAC is a true DIY kit...

As you know - the ODAC is good enough for everyone.

The ODAC is a great DAC. Compact. Sounds great. No fuss. Plug & go.

Where it lacks is:
1. No 88kHz decoding
2. No decoding of 176 or 192kHz
3. Requires a clean linear separate power supply (or Battery power as I have created) for optimal performance

Regarding nWavGuy, a lot of people have had their feathers ruffled and I think that is a good thing. For too long the audiophile community has been sold bullshit with the promise of better sound. Some of his comments are also bull as well, so he's somewhat hypocritical. However, the message is clear. Don't buy in to the bullshit.

And worst is, the so-called expert reviewers are the worst. Making audiophiles feel they're missing out on something, and to trust their subjective opinion. If it measures poorly, it probably sounds poor. Do yourself a favour and let real sound be your reference, not what some reviewer tells you to believe. And consider whether it's possible that a product will provide any real benefit. It's science, not magic.

You mean the reviewers subjective opinion, right?

I'd also emphasize "probably"--it's prima facie a strike against, but you still have to listen for yourself if you want to come to any judgement.

I don't see where the "audiophile" community intersects with ODAC. They can probably figure it out for themselves. No need to save them.

ODAC Rev B
« Reply #37 on: August 17, 2015, 07:55:28 AM »

Using my 2i2 + Focusrite ASIO drivers <- ODAC + ASIO4ALL drivers I get different results depending on drive. Best results were achieved when providing about 0.319 Vrms to the 2i2 interface. Much worse results on full scale.

It is possible my interface works best when given 0.319 Vrms. It is also possible I'm using the wrong cabling setup. I'm using this to go from the ODAC to the 2i2 line-inputs:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=601040&gclid=CjwKEAjwjMauBRDH-bOCo56b13wSJABA2-Hv4xYT4BoggExGrykZVAJRg9wNWHll-WnUsLb2BAwagRoCDM7w_wcB&kpid=601040

Since this is a DAC, no loads will be used (i.e. impedance seen by the DAC is about 10kohm from the 2i2 line-in)

Measurement                                          ODAC(NwAvGuy)     ODAC(UB)    ODAC(UB 0.319 Vrms)
THD+N 100 hz 0 dBFS                              0.0029% A             0.045%         0.0065%
THD+N 20 hz –1 dBFS                              0.003% A               0.041%         0.0075%
THD+N 10 Khz –1 dBFS                            0.003% A               0.041%         0.0078%
IMD CCIF 19/20 Khz –3 dBFS                     0.0011% A              0.022%         0.0033%
IMD SMPTE –1 dBFS                                 0.0004% A             0.094%         0.0185%
Maximum Output Line Out 100K                 2.0 Vrms                2.0 Vrms      0.319 Vrms

The above measurements were used to check things out against the specified specs. I would go forward with other tests discussed here in the site, but as it is things are not looking too good or in agreement with Harold's in my set-up.

I can disregard the full scale measurements as possible issues with my measurement set-up. The cherry picked 0.319 looks somewhat closer to what might be expected (though still off). With the exception of SMPTE which is way off.

Here are some plots from the 0.319 Vrms SMPTE tests:

Anyhow. May think about that QA400 stuff.

Maybe this JDSLabs ODAC Rev B is defective???

Here is Marv's measurement set. Will try to correlate tonite:

Note my input load is 10kohm instead of 64kohm, if that maters.
