So anyone out there use a CTH? Any suggestions for decent tubes without costing an arm and a leg?

I use a Jan 6922, various 12au7 and RCA 6FQ7 (clear top) as per sachu's recommendation. the rca clear tops are a good place to start imo...

Tim,
Try the RCA Cleartop.

They are affordable and sound great.
