"California" Headphones
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:56:41 AM »

neo-country trash-pop celebrity endoresment + bales of hay = win!!

Tyll's CES video

Head-fi Thread (which I shat all over)

 )(

I think it's pretty funny how blatant companies can be with their branding these days.  I mean bales of hay and an old truck at CES?  For a headphone?  People have gotten so used to this kind of marketing that I think we actually look for it and all they have to do is tell us what "lifestyle" their headphone represents.  "This is who you are if you wear this headphone"

Thought some of you would get a kick out of this if you didn't see it already.   :)p13

I read the review on headfonics and given Kyle seemed honest enough I don't see any reason why I should ever want that headphone...

Still not entirely clear how a pair of headphones can be "made for Country music." Maybe they use speychul magnets that give them extra twang or something.  :)p18

Their ridiculous vacuum tube headphones seem interesting, at least.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Got both, very mediocre.  And they stole my CES photo for their web page.

These are the guys that brought you Fanny Wang.  Blech.

You really shouldn't. I didn't want to be too blatantly mean about them on the website because they'll be sold at retail stores, and people might look up reviews for them. Mine will probably be the only detailed one created for them, and I'd rather have people buy these than Wescs or whatever, since they are genuinely better than whatever's sold at the skate shops they'll be sold at. I like my modded Portapros much more than them, but I was honest about them being better than Image Ones. Blech. And the fact that they said they'd send me a Silverado and sent me another Laredo doesn't inspire too much confidence. The one thing they do have is durability. I don't get what that's such a hard concept to get right.

The K181 and PX200 II will do just fine for me...

they dampened the drivers with hay to get that more "twang" needed for country music

As with me. I've been using them more and more lately (that swivel system is quite nice for stuffing them in bags), and that reminded me I've been meaning to delete the stuff comparing them to the K181. The AKG's slaughter them in every way except for the weird hole in the upper bass that I think is there.

I opened my pair of Laredos--nothing but plastic behind the drivers. Not too surprising, but some really simple damping made them a lot better. Even mass-loading the cups fixed some of the bloat. I really want to ask if they can like...get people to help them with sound.

The Sony MDR V6/7506 is known to be quite hollow in the cups. 20+ year old design and I have dubbed my V6 a headache inducer many times.

Stuffing the cups with the right materials does help. Even the venerable Pioneer Monitor 10 has its own dampening scheme.
