Need help with my TakeT setup
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:24:54 PM »

Hello fellow pirates.

I'm trying to find a nice replacement for my Leben CS-300XS, which is currently serving duty in my TakeT rig. Basically it's as follows:

Onkyo DAC-1000 --> Leben CS-300 --> TakeT TR2 (transformer box) --> TakeT H2+

The sound is surprisingly good given that the transformer box is crippling the H2+ and the Leben is a mushy, buzzy mess of an amp. Still I'd like to find a speaker amp I can pair with the TR2 that will sound cleaner and wont buzz.

I don't want to spend over $4,000.

Came across the Accuphase E-240, which seems pretty slick:

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Oh, and I plan on sending the TR2 and H2+ to Marv for measurements as soon as I get my setup sorted out.

I can probably help with integrated amp recommendations if that's what you'd like since I've been reading up on those a lot... because of the HE6.

What's the soundsig of the H2+?

It changes more than a lot of headphones I've experienced depending on what's in the chain. Generally speaking though I hear it as fairly linear in the mids and highs but with quite a bit of bass presence (seems in trying to solve the lack of bass with piezoelectric drivers Mr. Takei went a bit overboard lol). With poorly matched amps said bass can sound too bloated.

Any interest in a tube integrated, or just SS like the Accuphase?

So long as there's no added noise from the tubes, I'm fine with either.

Oooh. You should send these to purrin to bring to LA Meet. Bet tons of people would love to hear those.  :)p16

(Then again, prob don't want those being manhandled at a big meet).

They're surprisingly durable. The construction is all plastic, and the earcups themselves are modular and mounted onto the frame in a very novel way that lets you slide them right out. Even the earpads are part of the frame itself and not attached to the cups. I've got a spare frame too--- only costs like $75 from Mr. Takei.

It's those pleated piezoelectric drivers that make up the remaining $1,925 lol.

What about a used Pass INT30A? It should fit your budget.

If you want something cheaper, I've been planning to get a Peachtree... something. Nova maybe. It has a pretty good DAC, and the headphone out is decent. I liked how the speaker section sounded with the Hifimans I auditioned it with. Or even cheaper; a vintage Creek or Rotel integrated should be good enough. Maybe get something with tone controls for the bass :)

yamaha mx-1000 and cx-1000 combo

or

H/K 775 monoblocks and h/k 725 combo  :)p8

can get either of these sets under a 1000 or even 500 if you know where to look. the monoblocks probably much cheaper since harman kardon 700 series are not too well known outside of japan and hardcore audiophiles of the 80's(yamaha was one of the well known to be the most popular then and even now) but, if i had to choose what would probably sound overall ''cleaner'' in the signal and music i probably go harman kardon all the way cause some of their best designs ever in history of harman kardon and  Dr Matti Otala  changed the way how engineers looked at amp designing and affects of NFB(negative feedback). i do love yamaha too and their stuff. if looking save more money if choosing yamaha usually the m-65 and c-65 is the sweet spot for performance vs. price.

i know others but i usually know of models from the 80's and older. never really bothered with the newer stuff much. not because i can't. i just never bothered and felt the need to but do get curious sometimes.
