Best 30-40 dollar IEM's? (for my sister)
« on: July 20, 2012, 11:28:34 PM »

She currently has a pair of Sony EX-58 IEM's and likes how they fit, but the sound hurts her ears (I may have had something to do with her realizing that.. :)p8

SQ- So she's looking for something unoffensive, neither bassy or bright, something that's easy on the ears.  She'd probably rather sacrifice some clarity for a smoother response.  She's not analytical at all.
Fit- fairly small tips and not too deep for insertion, similar to the Sony's she has.

I know nothing about IEM's and Jokerl's thread is nauseating, I wind up writing down 20 candidates after reading for an hour and then give up.  Best 40 dollar IEM seems like a good thing to establish here.  There ought to be something at least decent.

Use this in the office, they're quite good actually, easy to use and not to deep, more than 40 i'm afraid.

I actually have the measurements to the older model, the M9, and they are awesome! I heard that they changed the formula and don't have the M9 anymore because of some complications as an OEM.

i remember trying the jvc marshmellows i think they're called. i don't remember exactly how they sounded but i think i found them not soo bad. i think you can find them locally for around 20 bucks or so. i guess they're worth a try.

Get the MeElec M9. I don't think the new version is as good, but let me dig up measurements for the older version...

I like the Monoprice MEP-933.  The one pair of included tips is garbage, but with Sony tips I get the stock midcentric sound with very smooth highs and nice inoffensive bass.  I have no audiophile terms to offer, sorry.

Oh, and they're 7 bucks and change, irrespective of shipping from SoCal.  They're designed to sit flush in the outer ear like customs, though fit has apparently been a problem for some people who probably like tiny IEMs.  They've been lovingly dubbed "the hair dryers" for reasons you'll see when you look them up.

The cable sucks little cat testes.  Not even from a cable snob perspective, I mean it just plain sucks.  Sheathed in fabric that will fray over a short period, tangles into a horrifying puzzle of Rubik's Cube proportion, and pretty microphonic unless you wear over ear and/or wear the length of the cord down your shirt.

But I like them.  Sound sig is (to put it simply) the closest I've heard to the sub-$100 orthos I love so much.  Get two pair and some interconnects, whatever excuse you prefer when ordering from Monoprice (mine was mini-DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI... great investment), and let me know what you think.

OR

Make me an offer on my SE215.  I know next to nothing about this earphone, except that I have one BNIB and I will probably not ever open it.
