I'm not too sure I get it either.

Maybe the robbers thinking the dye pack was a bomb and that after it went off that they were injured and bleeding since the dye pack was red and not the more typical blue or purple?

Yeah, never thought more about the color. The dye packs are always red. At least the one's I've seen. The robbers freaked out when it they exploded. It's pretty hard robbing a US bank.


Those things get activated once robbers leave the bank. I can't be too detailed on how they work, but I'm sure you can find out with further research.

They used to use the same dye packs on clothing sensors but they were bright yellow.  Till all the false positives and actual positives wrecked the merchandise counting as a loss for the stores.  The Fed refused to replace Dolce and Gabbana undies splattered in flourescent yellow for some reason.
