STAX SR007mk2 raw data - frequency response - RTA
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:24:18 PM »

Since I've been too lazy to make an SE -> true balanced doohickey for my stat amp, I've resorted to taking an RTA measurement of pink noise. These are not sealed measurements, so we will see some mid-bass emphasis and low bass roll-off. The RTA measurement method does come very close to the MLS impulse response based FR measurements which I usually take.

These are the mk2s which have more mid-bass and upper-midrange compared to the mk1. The earpad cushion springs were bent flat to bring the driver closer to the ears.

This is the response the LCD2/3 probably tries to strive for. IMO, what the LCD2/3 doesn't do right is that it doesn't slope down gently, but rather, it is totally flat up to the mid-range with a sudden extreme 10db shelf downward within the span of one octave. I feel a gentler constant slope from the bass down to the lower treble works better (this is how I tune my speakers.) Of course the STAX has more air and has a much smoother response overall (considering that the right driver pictured here is "defective" with a fine layer of dish soap caked over it.)

Powered sufficiently*, the 007 is a great headphone.

*I've seen at least more than two-three owners with an SRM323(or other modest amp)->SR007 sell off that combination. I found the bass too muddy/uncontrolled and the upper midrange too forward and harsh with the SRM323.

The FR will also change depending on age of the pads and how much clamping there is. I've heard a loose pair of MK1s sound like bloated bass canons on ones that don't seal well even on a good amp.

It's the measurement rig that is unsealed, not the ports. I'll take a sealed measurement when I get a chance.

is the SRM323 a preout/linout amp instead making use of speaker outputs? i never tried an amp that takes advantage of speaker outs yet with the stax i been trying. been using the little srm-212 that came with the sr-202. seems like the srm323 is not too much different than the srm-212 just from quick observation.

whaattt!!?? but my "SRM323" doesn't suck sucks with the 007!! ;)

Interesting curve...looking forward to sealed measurements and possibly a comparison with a O2mk1 version.

Let me know if you want to borrow mine..though might be easier to have n3rdling come over with his i would imagine :)
