My new cables!
« on: September 21, 2015, 09:34:09 PM »

I ordered some Blue Jeans cables on the 7th. The USPS tracking was updated on day 1 but then not again for 8 days. I called USPS and they said somebody would investigate. I received the package today, so 14 days to deliver a small 2-day priority box. The box is flattened, ripped open on 3 sides and it appears to have been soaked in water (water=best case scenario) and then dried out before sending it on. If the box had not been sealed with some tape it would have completely disintegrated. USPS wrapped the remnants in a plastic bag that says sorry for damaging your mail we hope it didn't inconvenience you. It is hilariously damaged. It looks like the box fell off the truck in the rain and then they ran it over. I wish they had included some sort of explanation. Cables appear to have escaped relatively unscathed! If this had been something expensive I would have completely lost it. Note to self - get the insurance from now on.

Priority has included $50 insurance FOC for a good year or so. That's an impressive level of sucky delivery, I'll give them that.

For a long time I was a big supporter of USPS over the "other" carriers. I was getting great service.  I have to say I think those days are over. Lately, it seems everything is late and there are more stories like this.

The "2 day" thing cracks me up. When the last three "2 day priority" packages arrived in about a week I spoke with a USPS representative. They said that 2 days was sort of an estimate and that it can take longer.  Why call it 2-day if it's going to take longer.

One supplier told me "well, we know it's going to late with USPS, but eventually it will get there".  Yeah... just like those cables; it got there, but in what condition?

Sorry, minor rant... but I'm now deciding if I want to support UPS or FedEx, both of which have their own demons.

I use USPS Priority at least three or four times a month, and very rarely have an issue. PM is "supposed" to arrive within 3 days, and for me at least 99% of the time the package arrives on time, the same day that was quoted at the time of shipment.

In the very rare instances where a shipment has been damaged, I've never had an issue collecting the insurance. Most of the time, for "typical" packages, UPS 3-day select or FedEX 3 day will cost twice as much as PM. Those two will not deliver to PO boxes, and they'll also tack on surcharges for "out of the way" delivery addresses.

For large, heavy items I tend to use UPS ground, because I think they are better at handling that sort of thing than the post office. For more fragile items, it definitely pays to let them pack it, unless you have a factory box with custom packaging. If all you have is some bubble wrap and a cardboard box, let them do it. If they break it, and you packed it, UPS will fight you on the insurance. If they packed it, they'll pay out without too many questions.

Great OP!  Honestly, it seems like deliveries in our area are getting more and more sketchy in recent months.  I actually witnessed our USPS guy throwing a small package from the side of his mail truck into my front bushes a few weeks ago.  WTF!  facepalm  Meanwhile, in the last week or so, amazon has evidently turned to having random dudes in unmarked trucks or vans show up on our doorstep with our last half-dozen or so deliveries.

On the East Coast they use LaserShip, the sketchiest delivery service ever, but also probably the fastest. I rush ordered something from newegg once, they had it on my doorstep in 4 hours when it shipped from New Jersey.

Sorry, minor rant... but I'm now deciding if I want to support UPS or FedEx, both of which have their own demons.
USPS - rings bell, brings packages (even ones like a 24" monitor" to the door), waits for me to answer door and HANDS ME MY DAMN PACKAGES.
UPS - drops package on door and leaves. Doesn't even ring bell. Doesn't leave package behind a convenient wall right next to door. Leaves packages in plain sight. Delivers the same way even at 8 pm or later. Luckily I heard a thump by the door.
FedEx - usually rings bell (sometimes not), usually dumps package behind the convenient wall or at least attempts to hide the package, leaves.

Over the last 5 years, USPS has improved by huge amounts. They seem hungry and willing to give good service. UPS has been like shit. I still remember DHL they pulled out, so UPS is only the 2nd shittiest. DHL barely hangs on to last place. FedEx has dropped a bit, but still provides good service.

Sorry to hear that USPS is worse where you are. Maybe its the Driver or the Manager or the local office which determines good service and not the company name.

I am happy Amazon has partnered with USPS to do Saturday delivery.

hello,

maybe i have been lucky, but USPS from east to west is fast with no damage or mis-deliveries.

UPS on the other hand was supposed to deliver a bicycle. first attempt was noted as "refused, damaged" (WTF???) and it took about 10 days longer for the replacement to show up. vendor waited until the "refused" item was returned to the originating warehouse. which i do not blame them for.

i live in an apartment complex with an actual onsite manager's office. i did not refuse the first shipment nor did anyone in the office see the package.

i think the driver just didn't want to take it off the truck.

I guess that, even though some of the couriers are multi-national, this is very much an American-courier thread, but I just wanted to say that Blue Jeans and Fedex got cables to my door in India in an unharmed, good box, and in just a few days.  Makes me sad to hear Mrip's experience.
