Cables are stupid
« on: August 12, 2015, 03:55:21 AM »

I've been spending the weekend reorganizing my bedroom and getting rid of things I don't need, blah blah who cares. I moved my desk and thus all my audio equipment, and had to rewire it. In the chaos I managed to find a nicer 3.5mm TRS to RCA than what was currently in my chain, and decided to replace the one in my audio chain with it.

Holy shit, what? This sounds fantastic. Why does this sound different?? Did the Geek Out get set to the wrong filter? Nope. What the shit.

So I got out my multimeter, and tested both cables. The new one stabilized at exactly 0.3 ohms on left, right, and ground. The old one stabilized at 0.6 ohms on left and right, and ranged from 4.2 ohms and 10.1 ohms on the ground channel. The ground channel never stablized -- 4.2 ohms was the minimum it ever hit -- and 90% of the time I didn't get a reading at all.

I've been using this fucking cable since I got the GO and Gustard, almost 4 months ago.

So yeah, fuck cables.

Did it sound like it was cutting out? In theory a 10Ohm line-out cable shouldn't make a difference.

"Have you tried it with different cables?" should be the audio equivalent of "have you tried turning it on and off again?"

There are an *astounding* number of bad cables out there. New. Old. In-between. Expensive. Cheap. In-between. Doesn't matter. There are also an astounding number of bad 1/8" to 1/4" adapters out there. And an absolutely amazing number of bad optical cables out there. And an equally amazing number of audiophile USB cables that don't pass USB 2.0 rates. Argh. Times 10000.

You would not believe the number of amps and DACs we've had returned for service (and found nothing wrong with them), *before* we learned to ask, pointedly and repeatedly, if other cables and adapters have been tried. Nobody wants to believe their cables are bad. It's almost a mania.

It wasn't cutting out, but the lack of sufficient/consistent continuity between the probes and the connectors is probably what caused the massive difference (yes, it was absolutely massive) in audible performance. I had to "search" for connection on the ground pin. It would work in some spots and not at all in others.

Or the Geek Out wasn't warmed up properly and was brighter sounding. Or I'm full of shit. Maybe a little of all three.

No you aren't full of shit. I wish it were as simple as they all sound the same. I also wish spending more money guaranteed performance. Oh well. There's people that sell cheap and expensive stuff that equally could give a shit about you cuz they gotcha already. :(

You're making me wish I hadn't sold off that AudioQuest Sydney interconnect I got when I won a Dragonfly in their contest. But idk, the connectors were silver, probably would be filthy and awful by now if it wasn't constantly plugged in and/or protected.

The tread title makes me reflect that cables are not meant to be intelligent!  ;)

But hey... there has come to be so much bullshit surrounding bits of wire connected to audio that it doesn't surprise me that people forget the most basic electrical measurement of all: does it actually conduct electricity reliably? Is it broken? Dead is easy, but partly broken, not so easy.

Far from being full of shit, getting out the meter is the way to go.

Ha! I was almost one of those people, my Yggy's sound was 6db different between the left and the right. I figured the DAC was off. Emailed and Alex told me to try the cables. He was right. I much prefer returning $40 cables instead of $2300 DACs the size of an old VCR.

When I was young, swap the channels (ic, speaker cables, crystal gadgets, whatever)  used to be the first-step trouble shoot on problems like that. At least it would have vindicated the DAC immediately.

Any recommendations for cheap cables that work as they should?
