Raspberry Pi 2
« on: August 06, 2015, 03:01:56 PM »

Read some pyrates were running Volumio on RPi2 on another thread, so I gave that a try too.

The amazing little box is now streaming music from my NAS to my amp.

The most expensive thing was the linear power supply

RPi2: $40
RPi2 case: $10
SD Card: $15 SanDisk Ultra 32gb
software: FREE (but feel free to donate)
keyboard: N/A using spare
monitor: N/A using HDMI adapter to an old monitor
CAT5 network cable: N/A using spare
HDMI cable: N/A using spare
DAC: $120 GO450 from Massdrop campaign
TRS to RCA cable: $10
5v power supply: ~$125 linear power supply with more amperes than necessary to run the GO450. You can use an old phone charger with micro USB cable, or better yet a 5v battery power pack for really clean power.

Basically you can build a music server for less than $200, depending on the parts.  :)p1

I'm still having problems having it run on wifi though, but you can't beat the price and the performance especially with a GO450

Had so much fun, I decided to actually run Ubuntu on another RPI2 box.

Sweet!

I wanna build a music server but since I don't have a NAS i thought id cut out the middle man (WiFi + NAS).  I want to use a hummingboard and a msata ssd -->I2s out to my dac, but I'm still figuring how to do it.

How's the quality compared to your computer?

Awesome joch!!! :)p7

I've been wondering about RPi2. Great to know that Volumio kicks butt.

I actually have a Node, and can say that the RPi2+GO450 is better because of the DAC.

Versus the GO450 running from my Mac, the RPi2+GO450 is still better because of the linear power supply. I haven't tried to rig the GO450 with a separate power source, which might give the Mac an advantage running Audirvana.

I'm not using the RPi2 as a computer per se--it's just a server. I'm controlling it via my iPhone to play music. You can have it attached to a monitor and keyboard/mouse, but you can control it through a web interface on a tablet, or with some phone apps. The way it's set up is RPi2 (without monitor/keyboard/mouse) > GO450 > amp input. That's it. Everything controlled from my phone via the browser.

It's not as slick or can stream as many internet stations as a Node, but for a basic music server it's quite good, and it's much more discrete.

If you don't have a NAS, you can plug in an external USB drive.

I got the Raspberry Pi official red & white case...the board just snaps into place, and you're ready to go in several minutes.

Now that I think about it, maybe I should have got an aluminum one, to cut down on EMIs...hmmmm

And for pyrates interested in doing this: go to raspberrypi.org for info.

Element14 and RS-online also sell the board and cases (and power supply) which are essentially what you need. Power supply too if you don't already have one.

Kits for projects and tutorials are available from many sites, like adafruit.com

To create your own Volumio OS for the Pi, instructions are at volumio.org

Got myself a Raspberry Pi 2 as well. Finished getting it set up with Archphile today. No sound impressions for now, as I am DACless waiting for my Gumby to make it back to me next week.

Getting archphile set up wasnt the easiest thing in the world, but Im pretty computer savvy, so I managed haha

One of the stumbling blocks I hit was getting my NAS share to mount, since there is a space in the path. The Archphile guide doesnt really cover that, and putting quotes around the path like you would in windows isnt the answer, you have to put "\040" in place of the space since that is the ASCII code for a space.

The other stumbling block I hit was getting MPD to scan the library. The library directory was right and the Music share was mounted there. but alas i just had to force it to update with "mpc update", though then it took like 15 minutes to scan and build its database.

Anyways, for now I have it running off an Anker battery pack, till I decide what to do for a linear power supply, and its running into my speakers for my tv just to make sure it works.

I also had to try a couple MPD clients for iOS to control the dang thing. The main client everyone talks about is MPoD, which is obviously what I tried first, well, that is old clunky software, and I think people only talk about it cause it was the only option for so long. It never got updated for the new iOS aesthetic after iOS 7 and it never got support for the iPhone 6, so it feels pretty abandoned. not to mention its performance is severely lacking. So i scrolled farther down the search results for MPD in the app store and found MPDluxe, which costs 2 bucks, but is totally worth it. Way better performance than MPod, smoother everything. It actually feels like a modern app. Only downside is there is no Artist/Album/Song views, and swipe gestures dont work in places that most would think they would work...anyways, I feel like it is an actively developed app and will improve unlike MPoD.

So for now I am pretty pleased, I will post more sound impressions once my Gumby arrives!

edit: I also figured out how to turn off the damn power LED which was bugging the crap out of me, run "echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/led1/brightness" much better now

Archphile is blazing fast in scanning the library for the first time (much faster than Moode or Volumio), mostly tnx to the solid code coming from Archlinux.

I had several issues with my NAS but resolved everything in a few days. My biggest problem was that I had a user name with spaces between the letters, this is not a problem for Windows but blocked access for the Rpi>Synology NAS. Took me a couple of days to figure out, now its 100% perfect. My library is close to 4TB, a clean scanning lasts maybe 15' and I have not had a single package drop even with dual DSDs.

Archphile with the proper packages will play everything (SACD ISO files included).

For those who might have missed it there is another thread here on CS http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2181.msg68169.html#msg68169
