Hifiman HE-5LE
« on: July 23, 2015, 04:04:56 AM »

I've seen a lot of discussion on the original HE-5 and LFF's Code-X, with virtually universal praise for them, but unfortunately around where I am noone seems to have either of them, and I have not had the good fortune to try them. With that said, at a recent local meet I got to try a pair of HE-5LEs someone else brought with them, and I really enjoyed them as a slightly darker, more laid back sound compared to the modded HE-560s I've been using for a while now. I just got an offer to buy them at about $400, though I'll probably have to replace the headband, and I wanted to know what you guys on here think about it, particularly if you could offer comparisons to the above-mentioned original HE-5 variants. Thanks.

HE5LE is a darker, warmer more laid back signature. Sounds better modded as most things do. Opens them up a bit. HE5 in stock form is a more analytical type listen with more clarity and air, definitely brighter. On the flavor spectrum, they are on opposite ends. HE5LE is closer to the HE500 sig.

Thanks for the input, Anax. I quite enjoy modding, and in this case I think regrilling and Jerg's fuzzor mods for a start won't hurt it. Anyone have ideas on which pads would be ideal?

I'm not sure about this headphone specifically, but you really can't go wrong with the Audeze Vegans.

I own it and I'm selling it if you're interested. Need cash to fund some other purchase ;) and i don't use it so much cuz my HD800 actually covers all bases for what I listen to.

It's really a good headphone , somewhat neutral with a slight bass boost. But IMO a notch or two under the HE-6 I could compare.  Easier to live due to the more laid-back sound sig and the fact it's easier to drive.  Nice bass impact. Mids are nowhere near what HE-6 offers though.  Compared to HE-4, the 5LE has more meat on the bones but keep a sense of air and openness.
