Rum Thread

(1/4) > >>

CCS:
We already have threads for some other beverages and liquors, so why not a thread for the pyrates' drink of choice?

Here is a place to discuss the drink that pyrates should enjoy most. White, dark, black, spiced, flavoured, what have you. I'd like to talk rum in general and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

My most recent drink?

Bacardi Oakheart. A spiced rum that is lighter on the spice, lighter on the sweetness and little stronger on the oak-y flavour that is present in the former bourbon barrels in which the drink is aged. A slightly smoky flavour enhances the finish on a drink that is strong on vanilla and has a gentle cinnamon tone. Personally, not a perfect drink, compared to my personal favourites, but a strong recommendation, especially to fans for bourbon. Mixes best, but acceptable when consumed neat or on ice. 7.5/10

CEE TEE:
Venezuelan Rum is my bag.  Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is good and decently priced.  ~$35.  Do not go for the cheaper version with the orange label.  This is sweet, totally drinkable straight and a crowd-pleaser.

As for Cuban and a smoky mixer, I like the 7 year Havana Club.  Black bottle.

CCS:
What about Gosling's, CT? Good stuff? I've read some decent reviews, but I like hearing from people who drink a decent amount of rum better than those who've had a taste.

Is Venezuelan typically sugar cane or molasses rum? I usually prefer molasses rum, despite sugar cane being considered the more "premium" drink, in general.

Anaxilus:
I have some Ron Zacapa Centanario I like.  That's a unique cane process. Had their premium TOTL that's not as good. Tried Kraken, meh, cool jug. Tastes too young. Captain Morgan is smooth for a mixer. Looking to try Flor De Cana in various guises. I hear it is one of the best all-round cheapies out there.

HroĆ°ulf:
Finally a rum thread!

My budget class fave is Old Captain. Mix it with coke (the soft drink variety), lime and it's pretty good, the alcohol isn't too noticeable.

For higher class mixes I prefer Havana Club - Anejo Reserva or Anejo 3 Anejos (cool for Cuba Libres). Avoid Anejo Especial.

Still looking form my favorite sipping rum.
