Driver Size
« on: June 25, 2015, 07:42:28 PM »

Im working on a headphone selection tool and wonder if anyone would ever search for headphones by driver size? I understand that driver size can create more air movement and such, but my experience is that the sheer size of the driver does not guarantee anything in terms of bass response or sound signature. Some manufacturers rave about the size of the driver in their new headphones and the difference it makes, but i'm wondering what the community thinks about it, and more importantly, if anyone would be tempted to look for only headphones with a specific driver dimensions.

If the purpose of your database is strictly as a buying guide then I don't think that driver size is a very useful metric.

Headphone drivers don't need to move very much air so other factors besides sheer displacement predominate in determining bass response.

When, would you say, driver size would be a useful metric?

When, would you say, driver size would be a useful metric?

I'm not really sure what it would be useful for all by itself.

All else equal there are many other things it would affect like high frequency response and the frequency of any breakup modes in the driver but by the time you get to a finished product there are too many other variables to make any conclusions based on the driver size alone.

So why do you think the manufacturers list it in specs?

Is there any reason you wouldn't want to list it? Will it take away from some other metric?

Bigger driver - tendency toward - better bass / lower bass distortion.

It's like engine displacement on car.

I used to look at it for modding candidates.
