One easily can get tired by too much of those things, in the long run. What to do?
One possible method is to add damping material to the outside of the cups, just enough to achieve a slight sobering up of the extravagance, but without adding resonances or changing the overall tonal balance.
I will show it done with the Philips X2 cans. The idea is to make an easily removable "snap on" acoustically transparent cage, very loosely* filled with cotton or other damping material.
The cage could be realized in many ways, of course: One uses what is at hand. Silver coated copper thread is very easy to solder on and always great to work with.
The outer part of the X2 cups has an outward pointing lip, able to hold the cage in place once it has been snapped on. The inner ring of the cage has a cut in one place, making the size and the clamping force adjustable. (Rubber band for firmer attachment is an obvious possibility, also).
*almost unbelievably loose, and then some..
(the massive socks seen below gave to much damping, the photo was added just for fun. one should eventually use a much thinner and softer material, like nylon).
P.S.
After a few hours of listening , I am happy with the result.
