Rig Critique? Suggestions?
« on: April 03, 2015, 02:46:38 AM »

Paraphrased from the shoutbox since it's kinda late... I'm putting together my dedicated audio chain and I want some input.

I'm looking to stay below $1k for now. Right now what I've got is Wyrd -> GeekOut 450 -> Gustard H10 or Schiit Lyr 2. I'm still on the fence about the amp; the Lyr will be more compatible with my headphone stable since I have a couple extremely inefficient headphones (Toshiba HR-810 and Audez'e LCD-1), but I'm not sure how much it has been improved over the original Lyr and I'm thinking the Gustard would not only be better as a whole but would also pair better with my Sansui SS-100 (which as it stands is currently my favorite of the three).

Any thoughts?

I preferred the original Lyr. Guess that makes me a member of the "tubes done wrong" school. (Though it depends with what; obviously, you don't want to muck up something pellucid.)

I don't think the Lyr 1 is "tubes done wrong" at all. It's a hybrid. Lyr 2 has the same presentation - just better. More lively, more involving, more detailed.

Sell all your crappy vintage headphones and follow the Messiah's path to enlightenment (building loudspeakers).

Anyone have suggestions for the DAC? I'm considering an HT-OMEGA Claro Halo as well.

I had a Claro Halo XT in my last PC.  As a gaming/htpc card it was (and still is) excellent but as a DAC/ADC I found it very susceptible to RF interference from inside the PC and elsewhere.  The ADC in particular had channel balance issues and even though the specs say 24/192 if you do a side by side vs my current TASCAM-3000 it's a total no contest in terms of resolution.  (admitted not fair comparison given price)

So in short (IMO of course) the Claro Halo is much better then the onboard Realtek chipset of the day (or even today) but for music you are likely better served by an budget modern DAC like a GO450/1000 or Modi 2.
