Beyerdynamic DT770 Premium 250 Ohm
« on: March 24, 2015, 12:57:00 AM »

Here's how this one looks like on my rig.

All stock. No mod. No special treatment.

Mod can take off a lot of treble. Click here for some measurements and some more details.

Dip at 4KHz isn't a measurement artifact. I keep seeing it no matter position. It's filled in CSD, but I suspect this "gap" that we are seeing is as a result of some impulse response issue or something like that, and this probably contributes to the treble sounding kinda "rough". And by the way, it actually does sound kinda rough.

Other than that, very very very clean sound. Bass is weird. Not just because of the bumpy FR, but because it really does sound weird. Not boomy, or strong, or even that emphasized. My Z7 and LCD-2 eats this one for breakfast... both at sub bass extension and bass impact. It actually sounds kinda... lean. And that dip at upper bass allows for some clarity, but does suck the soul out of the music. Makes for a thin sound.

This one is very clean sounding, though. I think cleaner than even the HE-560. If only its treble could be tuned down by another 3dB.

Overall, not bad at all. It won't get my seal of approval with dat treble, but it is admittedly a very decent headphone.

And maybe I got lucky or somethin'. Maybe a cherry unit? :)p1

Your measurements are fairly consistent with solderdude's.

Thanks!

I thought I was going crazy, because no matter how I positioned the headphone, that null didn't want to go away. And yet CSD kept hiding it. Very weird...

Anyway, this headphone does sound like how it measures. Lotsa treble. Very even elsewhere. Kinda peaky and uncomfy. EQ treble down does wonders here. There is a fair bit of midrange distortion, so sense of soundstage is not as good as my Z7 or LCD-2, but it's still very good for the price. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised to see the premium version doing so well, given how I've seen the pro version measures. This coupled with some good front-damping would probably be killer!

I assume the 250ohm is less bassy than the 80ohm? Or do you think you are not getting a good seal?

Felt = Win, and perhaps a little foam inside the cups could help with the midbass dip.

I think it's because the pads have deteriorated, and the headband is very loose, so I couldn't get a good seal either on my head or on the coupler, and the result is that bass output. Any other headphone sounds monstrous in comparison, since this one is so bass-light. Extension is quite good, though it gets soft at the extremes, likely due to higher distortions. I can't measure distortions worth my life, so I'll defer that measurement to some other folk. Will bring this pair in stock condition to CanJam and leave it to you for further measurements, if it's alright, Marv.

Heard the DT770 myself and it was (to my ears) more bassy than what your measurements suggest.

Definitely not my own experience with those headphones. Maybe bassy is not the right word though. IMO the DT770 is mid bassy but the DT880 extend better in lowest frequencies if I remember well.

Well, this one is not bassy at all. I think it's due to the clamping force (or lack thereof) and the ear pads.

It sounds like feather. A bit ethereal, even. Certainly lacking warmth like my LCD-2 and Z7, and yet not as separated/clean as the other 2.
