magnepans mgIIIA
« on: February 20, 2015, 02:36:23 AM »

I decided to put an interest check at craigslist for my technics sb7000a speakers for trade out of just pure curiosity while not expecting much but got a hit in less then couple hours of ad being up.

The guy offered me choices and out of them that seemed interesting was the magnepans mg3a and mirrored image, recapped, refoamed, good condition dehlquist dq10.

Told me the maggies mg3a is good condition,  and has external crossovers.

The dq10's are recapped with poly caps, foamed woofers, mirrored image and great condition as well but, told me he thinks the dq10's hype dont live up to their name.

Still having second thoughts here. I know of the dq10 of course and seen them before (pretty ugly looking speakers lol) and I know they have high value but, if anything im more interested into the maggies but know very little.

I have till tomorrow to let guy know. Still having second thoughts here though. What you think?

I think Maggie's are boring and have planar coloration though they are some of the least obvious in this regard among similar drivers. My 2c.

Rarely settle for a speaker without copper/aluminium shorting rings in the gap (for woofers and tweeters).. Top maggies may have the quality you are after, but for dynamics, the idea of anything <late-90s is positively neanderthal.

Well, im probably gonna turn him down later on cause some thinking and reading bout possible issues with maggies and I don't care for the dq10 really except for the very high resale value they get. I think bout it maybe some more cause I was not expecting any responses to be honest. Besides,  took me forever to find pair of technics sb7000a speakers myself. Might not have fancy name but they're superb sounding speakers.

These were made in 87 I believe. Was reading they're one of the last good panels magnepan made with true ribbon design. Heard after the m series the panels weren't as nice with cheaper crossover designs.

Well, guy sent me pictures and they look like they're great condition. Told me he knows about the delamting or whatever it's called with the wires between the tweeter and mid/woofer. Shown me pics to show everything is fine. The external crossovers are in great condition as well.

Told me he's gonna order extra feet for them today and would like to run them for a few days to ensure 100% functional before any farther plans cause had them stored away for about 7 months.
Says ribbon tweeters are great shape too.

Told me he has ton of other speaker sets as well if I want to look but I said I was only the magnepans seem interesting to me so far. Seems he's really interested in my technics sb7000a speakers.

He actually lives pretty close to me which is nice. Seems like a cool guy. Sometime next week ill talk to him  more so it'll give time to make a final decision.

Told me Ill need a good amp for them but my big Crown will easily drive them with ease. The ribbon tweeters are measured at 3ohms nominal which not bad and actually might allow my crown to strecth it's legs a bit maybe.

I don't know any of the speakers, although I have wanted to hear maggies but never did. still, a completely intuitive answer: keep the technics  :)p4

Just little update. I talked more with the older gentleman and he sent pics and everything of the new feet and everything for the maggies. Told me I can check them out sunday to see if I like them or not. These are my first pair magnepans I'll be listening to and might own but, from all the hardcore magnepan people I got lucky cause the mgIIIA is one of magnepans best/better speakers made.

Only concern about them as I told him and was told is the fragileness of ribbons on top and as long no slight gust of wind or anything they'll be fine. They're not so heavy but being 6ft tall panels I can see a slight issue with transporting them safely. If I do get them I probably borrow friend's suv again or rent a van for the transporting from his place to mine.

He was honest with me and told me he is mainly interested in my technics sb7000a speakers from a collector's perspective and my pair especially having original top and bottom grill covers in such great condition is considered to be very rare from what he told me. Reason for him making the trade offers that he's been making.

I'll be checking them out possibly this sunday and gonna finally meet him so I probably go from there. Told me I can swap back anytime if I like or keep the trade final depending on how much I like the magnepans mgIIIa speakers.

On other note another person offered me a trade for one of amps for pair of refoamed, and good condition infinity kappa 8's but I told him I get back to him. Always been curious about thoes and do know bout their reputation with supposedly being amp killers cause of the waltkin woofers they use and emit tweeters but I'll end up with too many speakers again. I have decent size listening space but my big altecs already take up good amount room themselves. I'll give it a thought maybe.

Have to see how the whole magnepan thing turns out first. They seem like pretty large panels themselves and see how space they take up. Will see.

Well, haven't went through the trade. Still have my technics sb7000a which is fine but I did make a good friend out of it.

Reason not going through is one of the ribbons were not working and has to replace them and it will be costly. Told me though once he finally gets them fixer I can give them a listen and hang out long as I like and if I end up really like them he'll help flip my technics for them but, it's no big deal. I like the technics sb7000a speakers a lot and my g/f is actually happy I decided to keep them cause she really likes them for some reason haha.

Im pretty much done though with lot of audio stuff anyways. Might either try to find nice crown macrotech or just try out actively bi-amping my big altecs with a nice ashly active crossover and a second big Crown CE2000 since I been finding some extra crown ce2000 amps locally for not bad prices (paid under 200 for my current crown ce2000 few months ago). Or might upgrade my interface maybe or plundge for some big 18" jbl professional/theater/organ woofers. Other then that im pretty much done and have too much stuff already and really satisfied with performance of my current system.
