Audeze LCD3 Fazor Measurements and Fast Impressions

Are the fazors better than the LCD3? It's possible. I think the answer depends on what grade your LCD3s are. I've heard a few better standard LCD3s in terms of snappier transient response, but I believe the fazors are supposed to be more consistent. But otherwise, the trademark LCD3 sound is there. Laid back. Great sub and low bass quality. Smoother treble than LCD2 or LCD-X.

Is the Fazor bass roll-off noticeable?

Marv, did you not mention somewhere that you had an LCD 2F coming in? Did you listen to it?

Not really. Oftentimes the tiny bass drops of a few db below 5db is the result of a less than seal. But no, I didn't hear any drop off in sub or low bass with music.

So this is more "reliable" version of lcd3 with minor different sonic-wise?

The changes to the driver are supposed to improve reliability and consistency of sound. The impedance of the newer LCD3F is higher at 110 ohms than the old LCD3 which I think was around 50ohms? This is a good thing because it increases compatibility with headamps.

If you go back in the HF threads, you'll read about the "veiled LCD3" issues early on; and even up to a year ago, I've heard different sounding LCD3rev1 with some sounding better than others; and some really good sounding LCD3r1s regressing to the "veiled state" over time. Gurubai, the resident ortho master here surmised that it may have been tension on the diaphragm causing these changes.

The bad thing is sometimes the lottery works in your favor. I know a few people with better sounding LCD3r1s than others. For example, Jason's LCD3r1 is fantastic and better sounding than all of the LCD3Fs I've heard. (I've only heard two LCDFs, so take the small sample size into consideration).

One other aspect which Anaxilus mentioned: the LCD3F seems to have a hint of LCD-X's plasticky timbre quality. Just a hint of that. So we wonder if Audeze is now going with a consistent more reliable diaphragm material. But for most part, I feel Audeze has done something really impressive in getting a new driver design to mimic the LCD3r1 so well.

When it comes down to it, I'd rate the LCD3F the same as an "grade B" LCD3r1.

P.S. Everything above is pure speculation. We could be full of shit.

Did you have any fatigue issues with these? What did you think of their treble quality/texture?

Now that I think of it, the older LCD3 standards were smoother sounding in the treble. These new fazors seem rougher with some grain. Sandpaper? Just that everything is rolled to shit where it's hard to pick up.

I'll put up graphs when I get back home.

I will not strech it too far, but could this somewhat confirm my idea that some diffraction products– per definition here of very high frequency content because of the smallness if dimensions involved-  rather could have a beneficial effect on the sound, in average?  At least when limited to the upper part of the top octave, say.
I would not be surprised if a main advantage of the addition of fazor bars, was be the added stiffness and weight to an important part of the driver.
Just some speculation…

Love the new pic. Are the Fazors set to stun, kill or as in the past disintegrate?  :)p8
