WTF UPS?
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:25:15 PM »

I ordered a Pono and finally got the shipping notice with a UPS tracking #.  Watching its route to me from China is bewildering.  It was in a UPS warehouse 30 minutes from my home (green pin) two days ago before taking off again for Alaska.  Today it apparently left Louisville Kentucky.  Someone's losing money on this.

Actually, maybe I'm an idiot and it was just the customs info being processed at my local depot prior to its arrival.  Still kind of an inefficient route.  Hasn't anyone invented teleportation yet?

That's completely bog-standard.  UPS has a dedicate Customs clearance facility at the Anchorage airport.  If you've ever flown from the US to Asia, you know that pretty much every route goes that way; it's actually shorter than going straight across the Pacific.

Everything then goes through Louisville because that's UPS' air hub.  Even stuff going to Anchorage would go to Louisville and then go back out to its destination.  It would be no different if it were FedEx, except that it would go to Memphis instead of Louisville.  The extra flying time adds less to the cost of shipping than the depreciation on another billion dollar facility on the west coast.

My package arrives at my local USPS in the am and is "out for delivery." 3 hours later it arrives at a USPS facility farther away with a note that says "in transit to the destination." What's up with that?

The online tracking for mine in Chicagoland says delivery by 8 PM, but the Post Office looked into it and told me it's in Chicago and won't get in till Wednesday night but they don't know why. (Probably Moslem terrorists. :)p3)
