marantz or nad or QSC? that is the question.
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:54:29 PM »

I plan on picking the fellowing and seeing what other pirates had to say.

I have 3 options here. All from the same dude that I been doing business with. Got my amazing technics sb7000a from him and he completely restored my Harman Kardon HK 700 series set (725 preamp and 770 dual-mono power amp) which he did such amazing job on.

Was at his place and I never saw so much high end Altec Lansing, B&W, Dehlquist, thiel, Maggie's, ect. Ever in my life haha. Saw all the amps he was working on too. Amazing.

I told him im just looking for a second power amp or receiver maybe as a back up. Showed me 3 offers he has available: QSC MX1500, NAD 7155, and a Marantz 4300 all which are restored and like brand new condition.

He told me he let the marantz go for 175, Qsc for around same as the marantz , and while he loves the nad and was gonna be a keeper he'll let it go for 90 bucks.

The nad seems like a no brainer of course but I am curious bout the marantz since I never heard that model before. I heard the QSC hooked to the thiel speakers using the kenwood C2 preamp I traded him and thought it sounded pretty good. The QSC sounded to me like a good performer and considering that.

Nad I know makes really good stuff too but never heard the 7155.

The marantz is the prettiest of course and while I remember hearing couple older models that thought were pretty nice I never found myself spending money on one cause outragous prices. Guy selling it knows their rediculous track record too and says since he likes me and repairs stuff for the love of it, he told me 175 if I find that fair if I want to give it a try.

I know the marantz will give me the highest resell value but I care more bout my sound then price. Im thinking of the marantz just out pure curiosity and since I just need a back up, why not?

What would you do? Im just curious.

I'd take whichever is the heaviest.

Haha, in that case it'll be the marantz weighing at 51lbs. The Qsc 46lbs but is dual-mono design. Nad is obviously the lightest but supposedly enough current reserves to double it's output down to 2ohms.

IIRC, I heard a marantz 4xxx model once and I would definitely prefer it over the NAD.

Really?  Well I think im gonna pick between the marantz and qsc now. I guess I hold from buying the nad as well since he told me he really likes it. Marantz might not be as bad as im thinking it's gonna be. I read good things so far bout it.

Well option is between just a nad, luxman and marantz.  Told me he rather keep the QSC since it's a real work horse and likes it with the kenwood c2 preamp. Told me can easily part with the nad and marantz.  Has a luxman receiver too but didnt tell me what model yet. I was actually considering the QSC over the marantz but since he decided to keep the QSC im gonna go for the marantz 4300. Thing looked huge when I saw it on his work spot.

Gonna pick it up next month sometime. For now waiting for my sys passive volume controller and figuring what Im gonna do with my listening space. Just finally glad get my speakers off the floor. Gave me some nice stands that was used for a pair of optimus speakers but they work and solidly made. Glad atleast I got my favorite amp set restored too.

When I get the sys passive volume controller I'll do a short impression best of my ability.  Next month when I pick the marantz up I'll do the same with pics if I can.

I don't own one but next time I see the dude I can take a pic. It's mx1500a. You can find pics online since there's plenty of them around. Like crown, qsc is a USA only company power amp maker. Meant more for pa or theater systems that needs sheer power. Even though the QSC 1500a I heard is meant for professional uses I thought it sounded good using kenwood c2 preamp and driving pair of thiel speakers(not sure what model but I thought they sounded pretty nice).

He is. Best guy I ever bought stuff off craigslist and does really good job with his work for very good prices. Will even work with you and your budget if you don't have it all right away. Will even do type of layways if you're a serious buyer and commit into staying in contact.

I still don't know how he finds this stuff though. Cause I can't tell you how long I looked around for the technics sb7000a and he told me he spotted them in a thrift store. He originally wanted 300 but after talking and telling what I got and ask if he do a partial trade he agreed with the kenwood c2 plus 150 cash. He never knew the C2 had such a fellowing and praise and that what made the deal cause he said he usually never do trades. He'll work with you and that's what I like. Not much people do that.
