I still wish I hadn't modded my Alessandro MS-1.  And I still want another pair (original version for size, I think they sound the same).  $99

Senn HD380 Pro (~$130) (fuck it, I'm blind), AKG K181 DJ (~$80, used to cost $170+)

When you compare the K181 DJ with the K81/518 you are comparing a tiger with a house cat. Solderdude measured my K181 DJ, it is a surprisingly good headphone regarding sound...

Or K240S instead of mk2 to make it a better value at around 70 to 80 bucks assuming the pleather pads sound better than the extra velours on the mk2. I have read somewhere that the mk2 is brighter than the Studio?hmm anyway I downloaded the wav files from this link and the K240s is pretty impressive compared to many other cans in its tonality vs other cans here. I just got some other cans I recently owned like the M50, and the K518 as well as the original source file and the K240S is the least colored. Heck based on this site, the K240S is better than the Audeze cans hahahha https://soundcloud.com/sonic-sense-pro-audio

Few more possibilities (Note: I've heard a few of these, the rest have read good/bad things about):

V-Moda Crossfade LP
Sony MDR-7506
Takstar Pro 80
Philips L1
Shure SRH440
Koss ProDJ200
KRK KNS 8400

Also, this is slightly above the suggested price range but maybe the Crackheadphone? I've been curious about it ever since I heard about it.

Monster N-Pulse (like $70 used --> $120 new)
M-Audio Q40
Skullcandy Aviators
Takstar Pro 80
CAL
Shure SRH440
There's an Audio-Technica ATH-WS99 for like $90 on Amazon Warehouse right now... at that price they rule, with the exception of comfort.

HD558 - Fairly balanced, open sound for the price.
CAL! - OK sound stock for price, strong mod potential with simple materials.
UE6000 - Quite bassy, but has good mids and treble - basshead done right, IMO. Can't comment on QC issues I've heard, as my pair is solid.

Also, this is slightly above the suggested price range but maybe the Crackheadphone? I've been curious about it ever since I heard about it.

Isn't it just a modded Monoprice 8323? They sound pretty good with DIY mods (don't cover up cup vents, I didn't notice them my first time around). But maybe the crack stuff is truly great and original? No idea.

Yea I think it is. Mods done probably aren't anything special, but if this is a guide for newbies I doubt they are going to want to do any modding. /shrug

Also, just wondering why the CAL! is recommended but not the CAL! 2? (really am curious.. I haven't heard anything about the CAL! 2)
