Not a typo, was talking to Tony and he repeated 1200 ohms after I gave him a puzzled look. The box they had amping it was ridiculously huge.

Certainly interesting, only other headphone that I know of having such a Z is the HD1k Charleston.

Honestly designing a planar around an OTL amp sounds just silly to me unless the driver really is something quite different.  Most planars have flat impedance curves anyway and they tend to favor current happy SS devices typically rather than voltage happy OTL tube amps.

The whole idea of a super hi Z planar (with lotsa lotsa traces I imagine) would be to make it less "current happy" so to speak.

Whether orthos are inherently "current happy" remains to be seen.

Or the whole idea of a high Z planar is to sell it along with their own rebadged OTL amp. Who knows, just taking a wild guess.

I dunno. Could be a retarded mistake. Betting it's 120.

My 150 ohm orthos work great with my diy OTL.In fact the 6as7 OTL is easily the best amp I have owned/heard.So, I sympathise with the attempt to build a planar which is a easier load on otls but its hard to understand the logic of a 1200 ohm headphone when a more mainstream 300-600 ohm impedance would have worked just as well.

Well, 1200 does get a you 10:1 factor of 120ohms output-z which is not completely unheard of for OTL.  The tube amps I like are between 1.5-4 z-out.  Not an issue with most orthos I've heard.

I don't think Audeze is really making a statement about how best to drive an ortho here, just that they might have developed a headphone around a system they will be promoting.

I think its more likely that they just experimented with denser traces and ended up with a driver which they liked with too high a impedance. So, instead of getting back to the drawing boards they decided to promote the downside as a positive feature.Nice marketing I'd say.

Looks like the first sign of some innovation from Audeze since the original LCD-2.  :P

I imagine with such a high impedance the traces must be super fine and long.  If true, depending on the design I can see problems arising if the traces easily break (say dropping the HP).  Hopefully Tyll gets inside and takes some pics.

Prototype-Z, lol that's pretty witty naming indeed.
