IEM cable and stage orientation
« on: August 24, 2014, 04:30:40 PM »

Hi, recently I got an Earsonic Sm3v2, which is using a 2-pin removable aftermarket cable. I was thinking this unit really sound different from all the IEM I has owned (most of them are non-removable cable versions). It sounds like the stage is very intimate, forward and quite live-like. Not wide, definitely very forward and feels like I'm part of the crews on the stage performing.

Then it stumbled upon me that, what IF i were listening to a messed up cable configuration? Since I don't know how to properly plug the 2-pin cable onto the IEM itself, and there isn't an ear guide to indicate the direction of the pin, I suspected that I could've plug it the opposite way (not left/right orientation, but rather +/- of the pins on the left and right side of the cable). And then I switched the pin's orientation and tried the same music again. True enough to my ears, I noticed that the entire stage has been flipped vertically. It feels like what was a very forward sounding stage suddenly became laid back, or rather, I am part of the audiences.

My question is: Is this the real life, is this just fantasy?  headbang Is the reason the stage becomes flipped due to the orientation of the pins? Or  rather, am I just imagining things?  :spank:

One of the channels was out of phase because of the flip. To figure out the right way to connect the IEMs simply play back a mono signal to both ears and the result should sound fairly centered - if it sounds weird then one of the connections is wired out of phase.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to play around with the cables.

Earsonics is flipped for their universals. Positive legs are below the ground pin.
