Aedle impressions
« on: August 09, 2014, 06:53:30 AM »

Just some quick thoughts on the Aedle.  Measurements may or may not be in the cards later on.  Thanks to burnsie for the loaner.

Overall, not too shabby.  Compared to others in this segment, it has a bit of the elevated lower bass for a designer closed can but not as bad as some of the others.  Mids (vocals and strings in particular are pretty clear and articulate, not the best but acceptable to good).  Treble has some natural ring and crispness to cymbals, but I think air could be improved a bit and crashes and rides might be a bit pushed back or subdued.  Would be interesting to see the measurements.  Bass is a touch north of neutral but not terribly excessive.  I do have issues with wooly nature of the bass being too nebulous which can be bit fatiguing on certain tracks.  In my case, I used Tool's Lateralus.  Percussion on track 8-Ticks and Leeches has very little if any definition.  There might be a slight roll or dip at the upper harmonics of snares as well which might coincide with my upper mids/treble comments. Soundstage is rather flat and there is a lack of air and separation compared to monsters like the HD800 who specialize in such things (track 9-Lateralus sounds incredibly 3D and holographic on the HD800 with the right source and amp).  Toms are much nicer and more articulate than the kick drums on this track.  Refinement is not the best wrt smoothness but not overly grainy or unrefined either, about what you'd expect at the price point and package size.

I do think it is a decent looks/performance headphone if you are keen on this type of sound signature and your genres mesh well.  Personally I have heard some relatively more neutral, cohesive and clear DT1350s at CES the past few years that I think I would prefer personally though I can't know for sure without a direct comparison.  I would like to hear what Aedle could do with a bigger driver.

Found this when looking up the impedance specs (32ohms) on their website to make sure I wasn't mucking up the bass with my Super7 (1.5ohms).

I can tell you straight away I would not pay anywhere near $500 for these things.  $250 at most, maybe a bit more depending on your lust for leather and aluminum.

Yep, that looks more or less consistent with this. For $250 the Thinksound on1 looks much better TBH.

Did Anax just recommend a Beyer?  The 1350 to boot!

At least the cherry picked one at CES relatively speaking.  No idea what you'll get at your door.

Purely on sound, I'd recommend the 558, 598, and possibly Amperior based on the HD25 or whatever FOTM Senn is calling it these days.  I really meant to say the MSRP shouldn't be higher than $250, not street price.

I can understand if you listen to certain types of music and have a lust for aluminum as a fruit accessory, they have a certain logic to them.  There are no nasty peaks per se and the veils are over largely non critical areas so it's not a total loss.
