It's true! This hobby just attracts a certain type of people! What is that type? People who sink tons of money into things in small increments over long periods of time. That's kinda the heart of audiophilia. Look at the car subforum! It's all people buying base or old models and spending tons of money fixing or modifying them over long periods of time. We're definitely not a "buy it and be satisfied" crowd!

Fanatical collectors and appreciators of a certain product, be it music, audio gear, photography or even stamps tend to have a specific spending pattern.

Of the products I just mentioned, I was in all four of them and more. Curiosity has had its effects. For now music it is...

You will likely not find a purely functionalist person happy with basic anything on a specialty forum.

Most of us are not easy to satisfy in one way or another.  It's not necessarily about escalating spending either, though that trend has certainly increased exponentially over the past few years due to top down pressures and marketing.  I remember when I started on H-fi I limited my future purchases to what I could cover with sales of current gear.  Lots of sidegrades and incremental improvements with the occasional budget gem.  Sadly, once you get to know better, there's little to stop you from chasing it and costs get out of control.  I don't think there's anything wrong with that as long as you learn to take a step back at times and ask yourself if you are within limits that you find acceptable.

Alternatively, a good many are happy with *everything* so they keep buying. Having no settled taste, their name is legion.

Yeah hoarding is something else entirely.  Found a picture of UncleErik's house. :)) :P

I didn't mean hoarding. I meant the people who have no discernible taste. They're just wowed by everything, especially if it's expensive. It's not that they have no personality: they have every personality. (Hence the reference.)  :)p3

In general you have several typical groups.

1. 1 to 4 headphones, preferably 1 headphone that is most often used.

2. 5 to 20 headphones, small collectors.

3. 21 to 50 headphones, small collectors with a bigger budget.

4. 51 to infinity, big collectors and hoarders who might start a museum or workshop in the future.

These groups are based on my observations over the years.

I use to have about 20 headphones just because I loved collecting and trying out different headphones. Over time I appreciated specific headphones more thus two K500s stayed. I keep the K400 because it is a direct AKG sibling. Now I have 7 headphones and 2 can go. The KSC75 really makes me reconsider what to keep and what to let go.
