After looking at the graph posted by tomscy2000, and reading Sonion's description of their 2800 driver, a really weird thing's just happened: I no longer enjoy the sound coming out of my LABs.

If anyone wants a mint pair of LABs, you can have them for $49.99 (price includes 48-hr door-to-door International Priority FedEx shipping anywhere in the world, PP fees, a 5-year Square Trade warranty, a 12-month no-questions-asked return policy (with a full refund), plus $200 compensation if you feel cheated and compelled to send the LABs back). Do note this is a genuine article purchased directly from the manufacturer (have heard rumours that LAB I fakes are fetching $2,500 on eBay, but I'm also told they graph much better than the real thing).

Subsequently I went out and bought five new ones for purposes that, if described, would empty your stomach.

If anyone has a pair of LABs, I will buy yours for $49.99, plus $200 compensation if you leave your earwax on the tips (I prefer my Labs pre-lubed for easy insertion). Do note I do not care if it is a genuine article purchased directly from the manufacturer, and I will pay 2500$ extra for fake units, as I have heard rumours that the chinese- made clones on ebay do not sound like poop.

Mr blue,

The information I have—from very reliable sources—is that LAB I fakes sold on eBay are not Chinese-made but German-made, sold by the top brass at Sennheiser, with a limited production run of 30 units, hence the high price-tag.

$200 would come in very handy, but, unfortunately, sparrows do not produce earwax — damn!

Hamburg or Munich? I feel much more secure if they were made closer to Switzerland.

Tomorrow my LABs will be on their way to james444 (think he's known as j444 here, though he hardly ever posts round these parts).

Let's see what Mr Uncool (aka james444) makes of the LABs (I personally think he won't be that impressed). James is one of the few people whose ears I trust even though we don't always agree or have the exact same sonic preferences (he's not a big fan of the ER4S, for instance), though we tend to agree more often than not. One thing's for sure, Mr Uncool tells it like it is, no matter how cheap/expensive a phone my be.

FWIW, another thing I like AND respect about Mr Uncool is that he accepts no freebies and does no reviews for any manufacturer (though he's been asked to do so several times in the past).

Don't know if Mr Uncool will be posting his impressions here (I doubt he will), but if his impressions aren't very positive, I'll make sure I post them here; if they're fairly positive, I won't.

For what it's worth, this just in (an email I've just received) from someone with an ABYSS/LAu combo (they don't happen to post on this site):

"Dude, just got them in.

And initial impressions are, yes, a very mature sound. No frills, elegant, yet so natural sounding!"

(Part of my response: "Dude"??!!")

Further impressions from the same person (I'll refer to him as "Mr Dude"). Once again, FWIW, Mr Dude has also auditioned/owned some of the usual TOTL suspects: HD800, TOTL Stax, LCDs, TH900, etc., and he's also heard/owned several TOTL IEMs.

Mr Dude: "These must be the most fatigue-free, easy listening audio devices I’ve ever heard. Sans PF perhaps. But the attack is soft, and not unnaturally sharp. In comparison (to headphone audio in general), it sounds slow and sluggish, almost veiled. But then all that detail and texture is there. You realize, you’re hearing an IEM unlike you’ve really heard before, and once again FAD is breaking the mental predispositions with this one. I can see how many would not like at on a first go. I can see the label as “dark.”

They sound ridiculously natural. Not neutral, but just… right."

music_4321: "Very interesting impressions. I won't comment further as I'd like you to spend a bit more time with the LABs...and see if your initial descriptions/impressions remain the same (perhaps they will). You should have got 5 diff tip sizes—see if there's a difference between the size you're using now and a smaller/larger one; unlike other IEMs with the usual S, M, L tips, I've noticed interesting changes with these new FAD tips."

Mr Dude: "You’re very right. Tips make a difference. Upon closer inspection, it's not the usual S-M-L lineup, there are some subtle differences. I was on the largest when I wrote that aforementioned impression. I stuck in the pointy medium-ish ones, and there is more presence/saturation, less bass, but tighter, and a smidgeon more sparkle up top.

Lots to go."

Mr Dude:

Lots to go."

Lots indeed transpired. And then lots more. Me thinks LAB I might be my favorite FAD yet.

Got the fit down. I don't think I would want more "air" up high. I quite like them as they are. As with everything Fadgical, you give them a couple days for your brain to settle in and eschew the biased "audiophile" banter, and then dawning of a new FAD experience ensues.

Of course, only if you're predisposed to reach that place.
