Headphone recordings (why hasn't this been done before?)
« on: May 14, 2014, 04:54:51 AM »

While searching for a new portable pair I came across this site:
http://www.sonicsense.com/

Who have the good habit of recording most of the audio equipment that hits their store in a reference room using a professional HATS, and making the recordings available to the public. I don't know if they apply any compensation against the effects of the fake pinnae and ear canals, nonetheless, notorious differences between headphones are still plainly audible (tonal balance, overall resolution). Their methodology isn't flawless, however, since there are a few botched recordings (DT1350, TH02...)

Most if not all of their headphone recordings are available here in full resolution:

Kudos to them for helping me avoid candidates with gross balance issues and shitty treble since there's basically no way for me to audition anything around here.

Haha, maybe I should have phrased the title differently because I didn't mean that at all...

Edit: Removed 'binaural' from the title.

Interesting. among the closed cans the krk 8xxx and the sony 7506 sounded closest to the original. Not bad. Problem is, I heard the 7506 in real life and didnt think they were that accurate hmmm I wonder if this is caused by product variations in cans or if the sonys just match well with the tonality of the microphone that captured the audio.

I think everything up until ~2 KHz is reasonably accurate.
It's quite shocking to see that almost all pairs have shitty treble : (

Could be an issue with the tonality of the mic and or acoustics.  There was a great article on the Koss ESP950 and Stax over at Stereophile years ago where they compared which was relatively most faithful to the recording (Stax) and which was most faithful to the actual performance (Koss) using a Piano.  I always found it an interesting piece when talking about neutral and accurate versus perceived natural sound.

I would think you'd want to listen to IEMs so that you don't have two ears in the response. (Your when listening and the heads during the recording.)  Pretty cool idea though, I'll have to check it out.  Thanks.

I like the idea in that it will give you a rough idea of how something might sound.

Obviously, a rough idea is much better than buying blindly but I still think the best way to demo stuff is with tracks you know well and with you actually hearing the product in person.

I had no idea these guys did headphone recordings too. Been subscribed to their youtube channel for a long time, their videos are only of studio monitor speakers though.
