Looking to posibbly upgrade cables to HD650's
« on: February 27, 2014, 06:48:33 AM »

 ahoy fellow pirates,

Recently I was contemplating upgrading to a better pair of cables for my HD650's. Do upgrading to better cables actually make much of a difference, and if so, can I get some recommendations? And what makes a cable better than another? Better sound quality? Any advice, help, links to good cables would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

P.S. If someone has some better cables for HD650's they'd be willing to sell, could you PM me? Thanks!

Most people here are cable agnostic or enough so that it's too much of a bother. I say stick with stock unless there is a physical reason you can't use it, such as the length being excessive, or not enough, or you require a balanced connection. All headphones that have replaceable cables use the same little wires inside the frame from the connection to the driver anyway. I don't see how replacing the rest changes anything.

Thank you for the post Maxvla. I have just read so many things about people replacing their cables on their cans that I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea or worth the money. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Game, don't be swept away by proclamations of night and day differences from cables.

Is the HD650 from the Bifrost/Vali still your main set up? If so you're already hearing that headphone at its best (or close to). There'll only be marginal improvement if you go a balanced rig. That's when a cable change becomes a necessity.

Cables are one of those things most of us decide we need to explore at some point in our audio journey.  The engineer in us may not want to believe, but in a largely subjective hobby sometimes the only way to convince yourself one way or the other is to try it yourself. Only you are going to be able to say if it's worth the money.

Look around for a used cable first... hopefully you can experiment on the cheap before you make a big investment.  Are you game for any DIY?  You can build a few cables to compare as well.

If you're searching around and finding threads like http://www.head-fi.org/t/641565/best-aftermarket-cable-for-the-sennheiser-hd-650 you'll find some examples of cables that are out there.  Cable "supporters" will typically tell you the differences are subtle and typically done as one of the last tweaks, after you get the rest of your rig right.

Good luck, and have fun!

thank you olor1n and shipsupt for your posts, I will take what you are saying into consideration. I was offered a used set of cables for the HD650's, we'll see if anything can come of it.

Thank you both again for your posts!

If you're thinking about DIY:ing cables, I might recommend my quick article on it:
http://www.headfonia.com/a-cable-not-rocket-science/

Cables are in my opinion the last thing you should invest in (and there's almost always something else to invest in).
Unless one or more of the following are a problem:
1) Aesthetics
2) Length
3) Termination

I wish you all the best and remain critical if possible, you might try/borrow a friends identical headphone and try them out of the same amp, however... there is a possibility that differences in useage of pads / drivers will actually contribute more than the actual cables differences. But that's me. I'm a cable-agnostic. Haven't heard anything yet that has convinced me.

I just sent a couple pairs of Zu Mobius HD600/650 cables to ultrabike to check out.

One pair is 1/4" and the other terminated in 3-pin XLR.

PM him for some opinions.  Or to borrow the 1/4" cable after he is done.  I think a Crack is money better spent.  And rolling tubes/capacitors in the amp (and the amp itself) will make a much bigger difference.

If you can get a better amp, do that first, and if you can get a better source, do that first. In my experience cables can make a difference, though perhaps less so with headphones than other areas. The difference also will be less if the cable is going to a socket followed by a stock wire than directly wired to the driver. Headphone cables tend to be fairly straight forward braided and twisted pair designs, there's usually no advanced geometry going on like you'd have with a high-end speaker cable. The small gauges required are also very affordable to get as bulk wire, even for TOTL OCC stuff, so you could easily make your own if you have some basic soldering experience. Just keep in mind that litz wire is generally a big PITA to deal with, you're better off regular stranded wire.
