New ATH-M50x Headphones
« on: January 24, 2014, 12:46:38 AM »

I am not sure if anyone has heard about this or not (if you have I apologize), but Audio Technica released the ATH-M50x Headphones. Supposedly the have the same sound signature except they have redesigned ATH-M50 headphones. Now they come with 3 detachable cables - coiled, straight and short straight (for portable players). Available in 3 colors! Available for Pre-order

Looks promising, especially the angled pads (maybe these ones will last a bit longer). Lets hope this isn't just a K702-esque "upgrade", i.e. exact same drivers.

These were my gateway drug into the headphone rabbit hole, glad to see them finally get rid of the non-detachable cable.  :gross:

Probably the same drivers, but there are a lot worse headphones.

Yeah, I own a pair of the ATH-M50's (Straight cable). For the price I think they are a solid set of cans. They have good bass and sound for the price IMO.

Bleh, looks like they went with a 2.5mm jack at the earcup. Why?!

Do you think there may be an acoustic leak from the jack hole? ~Tyll Hertsens

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

So as not to baffle consumers? Looks like they took Shure's lead on this one. Also means that L/R share grounds, maybe bad for imaging.

That locking mechanism looks the same as the one on the HD558/598, but the Senns didn't merge ground until the very bottom, and instead had a TRRS 2.5mm, theoretically enabling balanced connectivity.

At the same time, this cable probably fits:

I think it is kinda cool that they included 3 different cables. I know personally I prefer straight cables, but I know a lot of people out there like coiled ones, so that's kind of a cool feature. I know on my DT 990 Pros I really dislike the coiled cable, but that was the only way they came in (not sure if you can get a straight cable with them now or not without re-cabling them).

But like I was saying, for the price I think the ATH-M50's are a solid set of cans for their price IMO.

It depends what you pay for them: I have a pair as well and got them for $99 plus shipping, whereas a headphone store in my city sells them for $179. For a hundred bucks I too think they are a good value, not so much at almost twice that.
