Updating DAC/Amp in the new year...
« on: December 24, 2013, 03:41:40 AM »

Hello everyone!

Asking you fellow pirates for some opinions regarding DAC/Amps.
You see, I THINK I probably have all the headphones I want at the moment (with the exception of the LCD-XC by Audeze which I can't wait to try!) and was actually looking into updating my sources. Right now I'm rocking a Nuforce Icon HDP as DAC and guiding the sound to my Lehman BCL. Both are definitely on the bright side of the spectrum and I don't have major problems with them since I mostly use warmer cans but I think it might be time for an upgrade... maybe (that's were you come in).

Problem is, my budget is not super high so I cannot go high-end (although it seems that lately more products keep popping up that although cheap provide very good sound for their price ... i.e. Vali). Also, I'm limited by space, so as much as I'd probably like how the Asgard 2 sounds, it's a bit big (hence why I have the current combo). But I guess compromises can be made...

Anyway I was looking into:

BiFrost Uber + Violectric/Lake People amp or Burson Soloist (Conductor is too expensive)
The new Geek Pulse DAC/Amp
Yulong DA8 DAC/Amp

Can you guys/gals suggest a couple more so that I can look into them on this Christmas break and have new gear on the new year?  >:D

If you are wondering what I will drive with the new gear, here's my mostly used headphones:

Ultrasone Signature DJ
MrSpeakers Alpha Dogs
Perfect Sound Dido D901
Denon D5000 (Lawton modded)
Yamaha MT220s
Beyer T5p's (will probably sell soon)
Shure SRH1540s (will probably sell soon)

and I guess that's it.

Thanks!!

Matter of taste and convenience.  I love the Vali w/ my Hilo, and it's also good with Herus.  Haven't tried it w/ Concero yet.  OTOH, Schiit DACs have never done very much for me.

Concero HP can run off USB with no issues to speak of (unless you're asking it to drive HE-6).  All Schiit gear comes with wall-warts.

The good part is that both companies have 30-day return policies.

Thanks guys.
Are those recommendations a "Step-up" from my current gear though?

  • Terrible gear for the least discerning listeners.

Actually, no. Modi is USB-powered, and Bifrost and Gungnir are AC-powered with a proper internal power supply (no wall-wart.)
