With the proper settings.  Otherwise it's not that far removed from the AK100 IMO.

Yup. With the right headphones its definitely not bad, much better than the AK100 at least which I didn't like at all. I have no idea how it compares to the Sony, but it's better than the rest at least. IME with the balanced card the 901 is just a major step up, and given that the price of the AK120 and the 901+balanced is the same, I know which one I would get.

As far as I know, the HM-601/602 and 801 both use NOS DACs (former being TDA1543 and latter being PCM1704U-K). Measurements seem to indicate that as well. Something to keep in mind in case you are or aren't looking for that. There's a pretty good discussion about NOS DACs in the Metrum Quad measurements thread.
