If it's any help, the dx50 works very well with the UERMs but it truly shines when using line-out to the uha-6s mkii. There is some hiss with the headphone out, but it is not too bad and may be better on the newer batches. The form factor of the dx50 is also great imo, and just feels really nice in my hands. Another plus is that it uses removable batteries, so that if you run out, you can just swap out the batteries.

I still much prefer Hifiman to the A&Ks. I am curious about the Sony, but have a hard time paying nearly $800 for one. I also wonder why it seems like nobody ever mentions the HM-901 but me. IME with the balanced output card it stomps on the A&K.

I haven't heard the balanced card.

Do like the 120, not the 100.  Both are overpriced.  I still prefer my phone as a source to a DAC/Amp.  Apart from the Leckerton and Glacier, I can think of three other similar type of devices potentially coming out.

Do you wear pants with pockets big enough for an old school Walkman?

The only $800 Walkman is the ZX1 35th Anniversary model. The F887 is cheaper but largely similar. The F807 is cheaper still and a nice player in its own right. To my mind the Walkman line has some of the best ratio of usability (form factor, battery life, stability) to sound quality.

These days I just don't have any patience for brick players, as they tend to fail in usability: they're awkward to handle on the go, usually loaded with buggy and clunky software, and their battery life isn't great. On top of all that, their sound quality is honestly not that much better than substantially smaller and easier-to-use players. At least not enough to merit my living with their shortcomings. Really unless you plan on lugging around full-sized headphones or just want a little unit to keep on your desk, I feel these bigger players are overkill anyway.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

The HM-901 kinda sucks (only tried direct out via built-in headamp). Doesn't sound SABREy at all, but they went so far in the other direction of cover up the SABRE sound signature that it just ended up sounding bleh and dull. HM-801 was the best DAP they (HFM) ever made, and even then the built-in amp sucked. The HM-601 wasn't too shabby either.

The AK120, despite having a polite sound, destroys the HM-901.

There's the 901, and the 901 with the balanced card. If you haven't head it with balanced, honestly you haven't heard it. The standard output sucks. With balanced I think its the best DAP on the market.

So balanced into TRS plug again right?  627 is a good match for the SABRE.  Anyone have an RMAA of the new card?  Just curious.

Yeah, 3.5mm TRRS balanced, or you can use a standard mini-plug in SE mode.
