Some stuff on the BitHead
« on: December 21, 2013, 10:20:18 PM »

I did some RMAA tests on my TotalBitHead @1Vrms into 33 ohms, and I think got the amp section results fairly close to what's shown at IF somewhere in here

The noise spectrums look close too me. THD + N I think IF had 0.0133%, and I got 0.0132% (L) 0.0142% (R) (A-weight and less otherwise). In IMD I think IF show more, but that maybe because Tyll got to up to 48 kHz, and mine go only upto 20 kHz. The spectums look close to me from 0 to 20 kHz...

Frequency Response

Noise Spectrum

THD

IMD

Frequency response (from 40 Hz to 15 kHz), dB+0.54, +0.03Good
Noise level, dB (A)-94.3Very good
Dynamic range, dB (A)93.1Very good
THD, %0.0099Very good
THD + Noise, dB (A)-77.1Average
IMD + Noise, %0.012Very good
Stereo crosstalk, dB-68.7Good
IMD at 10 kHz, %0.011Very good
General performanceVery good

Not "the best" across the board, but it's a pretty good amp IMO. Very practical. Though it does seem to roll of a little on the lows. With my laptop it can sometimes get noisy, probably due to the USB interface. Like the crossfeed option and like the fact that it can drive two cans. More than enough power for the cans I use. I like it also for personal reasons and IMO it's a classic.

So am I right in surmising that it sounds a bit sterile and with some hiss/noise at the same time... if that makes any sense?

BTW, the bithead was the first integrated headphone amp I learned about when I started this hobby a few years ago, so it kinda brings me back.

The noise thing is not really hiss but some low level random tones or so. Maybe some computer signal or something. Dunno. It can sound a little lean but more controlled than what you get with an HP laptop. Relative to a Leckerton, the Leckerton is better in every department IMO. But I think the BitHead is an older design. Would have loved to see an MK2 of the BitHead.
