Wait a sec... 12 drivers per earpiece?!
« on: November 18, 2013, 04:33:28 PM »

Well, I've been out of the earphone game for quite a while now and out of the blue I see JH post a pic and link of their new CIEM with 12 drivers per ear. That my friends is 24 drivers in total... http://www.jhaudio.com/content/sirens-roxanne

Opinions? My Frogbeats C5 has 5 and I thought that was a lot but 12?! Overkill? Anyone care to explain why 12 drivers is needed?

Moar crossovers! Oh wait...

12 drivers is physically impossible. 5 drivers is pushing it already (I do have SE-5) You could get away maybe with 6 duals... That makes "12 drivers". Ha.
The tricky part then is which drivers these will be, dual bass drivers are not plentiful.

Perhaps those are truly some experimental quad drivers?

12 drivers is physically impossible.

I've seen some truly big ears, so I'd dispute this claim. This guy puts Dumbo to shame.

BTW, the clinical term is called 'macrotia', as opposed to 'microtia' (I've seen that too, but only in a clinical setting --- these people have issues hearing properly, understandably --- their HRTF is effed up)

The Roxanne has a trio of quads per side.

As for "why," well, the simplest answer is 12 is more than 10, which is in turn more than 8, which is in turn more than 6, and so on and so forth. In other words: marketing. Moar is better.

Only in this case, it's not really. In fact I see it as presenting more opportunities for things to go wrong, and it will take quite a bit of finagling to get all those bits and bobs to work together harmoniously. The Roxanne could very well end up being an incoherent mess.

Still want to hear it.

By the way, the Noble 10 with its ten drivers apparently fits my ears, but I'm pretty sure my ear canals aren't big enough for the SE5 with its five independent bores (FitEar couldn't even fit 3 bores into my MH335DW and had to merge two of them halfway up the stem).

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

I hope they have a 12-way crossover for them.
