AMB Sigma11 Power Supply for OR5 USB Converter
« on: November 14, 2013, 11:31:02 PM »

OR5 power supply (AMB Sigma11) impressions:

I already had some populated Sigma22 boards lying around, but too lazy to put in a chassis and the negative rail would be wasted, so I had fishski here build me an AMB Sigma11. Really great build with attention to detail. I'm kind of hands-off when it comes to stuff like this, but I really like the power switch button he picked out and the umbilical that he made. We can see the box sitting below the OR5 in the picture below.

Sonics - as far as sonics, we are really splitting hairs now. It took me quite a while to get used to and note differences. But overall changes compared to the stock wall wart:
  • Smoother more refined presentation. This lets me change the stop-band attention on the A-GD M7 to -90db. This adds some tone density, but at the cost of a coarser sound. With this PS, I can now get away with using this mode on the A-GD.
  • Stronger bass dynamics and bass sustain, particularly down in low and sub bass.
  • Blacker background
  • Better microdynamic presentation (very minor)
  • More extraction of microdetail (very minor)
Again, we are splitting hairs here.

At THE SHOW when Anax asked Steve of his experience with the Turboclocks being a bit artificial sounding, Steve responded that at that level, a better PS than the wall wart would probably be required. It would appear that Steve could be right considering #1 above. With the AMB sigma11, the OR5 has sort of taken on a darker* quieter quality without losing bite, resolution, speed, etc. This is a good thing. *Hard to describe, but I'm not talking about tonal balance - think "OPA627", but done better.

Yep, the Sigma11 is a very nice linear PS. If you're interested, some day I'll build you a Salas Shunt for it. It'd be interesting to A/B them (both are my 'go to' supplies - depending on application). More and more I'm loving what a properly tuned shunt brings.

Yes, that would be interesting. The OR5 uses Hynes regs, so could be fun to play with that or so some serious surgery.

Hi, do you know if you can use these DIY power supply units with an apex arete or peak?

I'm not sure what voltage the Apex gear needs, but I'd be surprised if the Sigma 11 couldn't be set up to handle either of them easily.  It is, essentially, doing the same thing that the Volcano PSU is.

I think Purrin used to have an Apex amp, he might remember some details.

sigma11 can be configured for 5-36V and 1.3A continuous with oversized on-board heatsinks and adequate ventilation.  it's capable of much higher current peaks, but if you need more continuous current, off-board heatsinks would be necessary.

I opened up the the Volcano power supply. It was basically transformer - diodes - cap bank... I think it was 110,000uF or something ridiculously huge. With the Arete, the PS sounded smoother with less grain or harshness. The effect wasn't huge.

The AMB sigma11 is totally different in terms of design.

Fish, how much current can the sigma22 output with off board sinks (continuous)?

i have no idea.  the sigma11/22 have no current limiting.  total continuous current is going to be primarily defined by the TO-220 package size, fuse and TX rating.  the MOSFETs are rated for 17A (or so, depending on temp) and a junction temp of 175C.  proper engineering principles would dictate around %50 rated max spec for continuous demands.  TK recommends Tj=100C max as safe for long term reliability.  the physical size of the TO-220 MOSFET package is probably the final arbitrator along with proper mounting techniques since power dissipation is related to surface area of the device.  i can ping TK asking what the reasonable max dissipation of the T-220 package is assuming big-ass heatsinks, or KG could chime in.

But back to the OPs question about the Apex stuff... I can't imagine that the Sigma can't handle those amps, properly set up of course...?
