Had to go analog...
« on: November 06, 2013, 07:20:42 PM »

Just so you know I wasn't kidding last night in the shout box, digital audio was giving me fits so I went old school!   :)p4

Technics RS-1506 before I do some refurbishments and upgrades.

That thing is a beast.

Outside of expensive boutique wares of the sort The Tape Project hawks where does one find R2R tapes?

Some companies still supply materials and products for R2R. Any recording or broadcasting company still into analogue recordings has its contacts. If not pro-audio companies think of small companies.

Take Polaroid with its peculiar cassettes for film. The Impossible Project took over because there was still a large enough group of enthusiasts interested in 'Polaroid Photography'. (I eventually gave away my Polaroid camera.)

Options are VERY limited.  There are a few other suppliers of high end stuff outside of The Tape Project, but they are spendy and the catalog is limited.

Buying vintage is a hit or miss proposition. Most of the slow speed stuff is crap.  Some of the 7 1/2" per second stuff is half way decent, but not good enough to make the big investment in a deck and amp.  The whole project is one of those things you have to do because it's fun and you'll end up with a few really special tapes to listen to.
