What if we painted the cups chartreuse or wore a chinstrap wig with it? What if we commissioned a stranger to give it a name and invent an elaborate backstory for it involving Turkish Delight? Alternatively, what if the problems turn out to not even be problems in the first place?

Anyway...

The pads on the K812 are quite unlike any other AKG. They actually remind me of those on the Qualia 010 somewhat. In fact, the overall shape of the chamber inside the cups and how the flatter pads are positioned relative to it reminds me of the Qualia 010 somewhat as well. In other words, I'm pretty sure these pads are optimized for the K812 and part of the engineering that went into it.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Almost every series of AKG headphones i.e. K240, K141, K701 etcetera has specific ear pads for it. The old part catalogues are littered with them. It seems to be typical for German headphones made by Sennheiser, AKG and Beyerdynamic.

The Sony Qualia ear pad part is interesting. AKG seems to make different design choices with the K812.

I get it. Thing is some headphone designs were sometimes weird enough to warrant even your description.

P.S. The blog is pretty interesting. End of derailment.

Most AKG pads I've seen though are still pretty pedestrian. By comparison, the K812's pads look like they've been more thoroughly engineered, and I suspect changing them would end up creating more problems than it might potentially solve.

I liked the K812 pads. Very modern style and very comfortable.

Btw, just came across this image for those that haven't seen the K812 inside the cups.

It's remarkable how empty flagship cans appear.

MF,
i was just looking for an excuse to pee on the HD800.  i can't wait to hear the AKG.  for me, AKG is like an abusive marriage where you keep coming back home.  hopefully things are different this time.

Just for comparison, here's the Q010 inside the cups:

But then the Qualia drivers a quite a bit different:

Apparent made from crushed seashells or something.

@ fish: Yeah, I'm not a fan of the K701 of K550 myself. The K812 is leagues better to my ears.

So regardless of the rather high HD-measurements, the bass seems to be very articulate and snappy. At least according to every listener's impressions so far.
Good to hear it's not something like the SRH1840, where it's pretty muffled all the way through, no matter what kind of bass you're listening to. They look plenty different on the paper though, so wasn't really expecting this anyway.

I love how people have "submitted" to the use of words like "musical" and "prat". It's like British hi-fi in the 90's all over again  :)p1 All the more excited to hear these.

Someone on HF posted this and I glanced through it, but I don't know a lot of the technical stuff it contains. Looks interesting though.
